I believe they said that this last Thursday was the last of the chick deliveries until fall.

I just check with Adens in Gilbert off of Williams Field Rd and Power and they said they will have chicks all summer. They carry them year around. He said he can order me any one that I want also. He orders so many they will just throw it onto his shipment. That is cool! They have red laced Wydnottes coming in. That sounds interesting. I love my silver laced. She is so quiet and a character too.

YEA !!! Its tortise time!!! I too have a big sulcata guy and a little desert tortise guy. They are great and odd pets. Mine comes to me when he sees me and he also comes when I call his name!!! Maybe we should start a TORTISE thread (lol). Did someones tortise get stung by a scorpion? I cant imagine how that could occur. Hope everyting works out well!

Mine are Russian Tortoises, but similar care to the desert tortoise. My female, Squirtle was stung by a scorpion last summer. She was named by my son who loves pokemon ... we also have Sunflora who is also female, and Blue Fellow who is our boy. We've actually had three Sunflora's before we managed to get another female. Anyway, I came out to feed them one evening and found her paralyzed, and stuck in the sun, where she ended up with heat stroke too . I sure was wishing I had fed them in the morning that day! The only thing she could move was her head, and her back legs were stuck out straight like sticks. I took her to the vet right away (they worked her in), and they gave her a prednisone shot, and said all I could do was keep her indoors with no heat light and hope she would get better. We had to tube fed her and soaked her frequently for about 3 months, and gradually she started being able to move a little. Last winter before hibernation, she finally started to eat a little. She has some brain damage / or eye damage because she has poor depth perception now. She would air bite near the food, but couldn't get it in her mouth. I would hold some for her, and then let her try some more. I really didn't think she would make it at that time. I went ahead and let her hibernate, thinking the cold might be good for her brain. About March-ish, she came out of hibernation, and still wouldn't eat anything. I was thinking I would have to put her to sleep, because I can't really tube feed a tortoise for 100 years! She would go to the food, and smell it, and then go back to her burrow. I had to bring her out to soak or to look at the food. Then one day, she started eating weeds, I can not tell you how thankful I was ... I just sat and watched her eat for the longest time, I almost cried because I was so happy. She figured out that if she stepped on the weed and bit at the ground she could eat. For a few months all she would eat was weeds, then she started eating a little spring mix too when we were short on weeds. Now she's eating really well. She'll eat anything, and if she air bites for food, she'll only do it a few times before she goes to the food and bites at the ground. She's moving well and is bright eyed and very active again. She comes running again now when she sees me coming to get food or treats The sting happened last June or July ... so it's taken a long time for her to get better.

Just be careful with Adens and their chicks. Sometimes they look good, and other times they are in terrible shape. One time when I went in, every chick in there had severe pasty butt, and there were dead chicks in the stacked brooders, and empty brooders with decomposed chick parts (feathers / bones etc). Other times they look okay. They also have other chicks in a horse stall arrangement and they always look good.

Have I mentioned that Tylan is the stuff? Thank you Mikey for recommending it to me! One of my 2 month old pullets ended up making some funny sounds yesterday. I noticed she was breathing through her beak and not her nostril. She looked to be gasping for breath with each time she tried to suck in air. Her eyes were fine, her nose was dry and clear. I have no idea. So I gave her a shot of Tylan yesterday and hoped for the best. She made it through the night and is no longer gasping for breath! She was actually cheeping like she should! I gave her another shot today. I will give her her final shot tomorrow. I cannot believe how that stuff just knocks out resp. illnesses the way it does. Great stuff!

I this morning, I processed the two roos that I got from notinoz. They were both rejects from the Aloha project, the larger one dressed out at 3 1/4 pounds and the smaller one dressed out at 2 pounds. I think that they will be excellent fried chicken for Sunday dinner tomorrow.

I don't think I mentioned, but the Icelandic roo I got from Mahonri dressed out at 1.5 pounds. Quite a difference!

For what its worth, I've had chicks shipped in the summer and not had any problems. My Pet Chicken often has a special on sexed pullets around August, and I believe that other hatcheries do as well, so if you wait until July or August, sometimes you can get a bargain.
