Arizona Chickens

Hello again gang! I'm just curious when I should expect eggs from my layers. Maybe I'm being a little impatient, but it's been 3 days and my 4 hens haven't laid anything yet. Do you think that they need more time to settle in and get comfortable? Thanks for your help and I really love this new hobby of mine!!
anytime I change something or disturb my girls it takes them a week to start laying again. Give them at least a week to settle in.

Yes it was a really long day. I had to take my 2 year old to an allergy specialist and it was 2.5 hours one way. then we saw a horrible accident where a 15 year old was thrown from a truck and died. I was done by the time I got home and was barely coherent. my husband wants gambel quail so I thought that I would tryy to find some for him since he is so good about us having a 100 chickens!!
I will check and let you know , my neighbor has about 5000 but I dont know what kinds . He breeds all different ones (Ok they said no Gamble Quail because its illegal to keep and sell them sorry

A new feature to my yard and a bad new habit for the pooch. Found the pooch coming out of the coop today why an egg gently clutched in her teeth. She set it down, rolled over it a few times, picked it up and ran to the other side of the yard. I went jaunting quickly through the house, swung open the back door as she laid down to do what ever it was she planned to do. She, then came running for the door as I ran for the egg. The egg had no cracks in it at all, it was rinsed and placed in the fridge. A few hours later, I saw her chasing a new back yard feature, a squirrel. I didn't even know we had squirrels in this part of town (far east mesa on the edge of the desert), I don't recall ever seeing one other than in a very dense park. Very strange. Wonder if it'll come back. Now my husband thinks the snakes are next.
That is so funny , Where is the video camra when this stuff happens so we can win the million

How is everyone's flock doing during this heat? It is going to be a long summer worrying about the girls everyday

I have the misters running, ice block in the coop every morning and fresh water daily. I guess there isn't much more I can do. They seem to be doing ok although I do notice a little panting.
Your doing everything right

I didn't think we has squirrels either until I saw one outside in the landscaping at On The Border on Power Rd and High way 60 during lunch one day. How strange. Kris

I bet when people started hauling wood down from the mountains, they probabley brought some squirrels too and that is why they are here. My grandparents had the same thing happen with wood they hauled for their fireplace.

Quote: I wonder if you saw a Rock Squirrel? They look very much like grey squirrels back east but are native to the lower deserts of AZ. They are cute but unbelievably destructive. My neighbor has a group of them living under their sheds and they've made a terrible mess with their excavations. I think it was Mama Hen Chris that recently posted a pic of one.

i have the misters going a few times a day, haven't set up the evap yet or water pans to stand in and they seem to be doing alright. think i am at the point that if i have to be out there caring for them more than for my kids, then it's time for that type of bird to move along. if it can't withstand our summers with all the shade and water i provide, plus extras, forget it. can i just say again, I AM DIGGING THESE DUCKS!!!!!!!!!!

I agree, it sounds like a rock squirrel. I found one climbing the chicken wire on one of my garden beds this afternoon. Little bugger! I shooed him away but I'm sure he'll be back. They are fun but they sure make a mess, and I'm not looking forward to garden wars. Kinda bummed they found the garden, but I guess it's inevitable. Crossing my fingers hoping they don't find the feed trough in the enclosed coop/run
