GrannysRoost and Novaleigh - I am so sorry for your losses.

Thanks Bootsie...I am going to go follow my little guy in the morning for a stool sample as he was sick first and we got him back so far, if that doesn't work, the U of A in Tuscon does dog necropsy, so we will see, I really need to know what it was for the sake of the other dogs. They do like to eat bird poo, especially under my quail pen.

Nova, so sorry you have had such bad luck with the birds lately. I would worry about kids, but I can't trust my dogs near the birds, I lock the doggy door when I feed, I won't take a chance, but I have a choice. It is hard when dealing with neighbors.

I had 3 new quail die in the waterer last night and all were soaked, so we cleaned the brooder...lost a light one today so 6/10 hatched. I went to clean some out of the bator tonight and tossed...granddaughter heard squeaking from the wastebasket...we helped it out and another so 2 more and the one egg left was making noise...we'll see!

Thank you all so much for your condolences. I am working hard to get that murdering mongerel removed from this area. If that dog stays, it WILL kill again. It went through great feats to get at my poor babies. What breaks my heart the most is my poor geese. They both tried so hard to protect my flock...and they are pretty much babies themselves! They are only 1 month and 1 week old! They managed to protect the ducks...and the dog mauled them horribly for doing so. Breaks my heart!! The ducks are not harmed..my geese (who imprinted to me at birth and love me as their mother..even come when I call!) are mauled horrible and I hope they live. Many of my chickens were mauled to death, just the little ones..the bigger ones are OK. The dog owner says he will be trying to find the dog a new home. Come hell or high water, that dog is GONE by tomorrow! I cannot spend another sleepless night..worried sick that the horrible flea bitten murder jumps my fence again. I have too many pets that I love dearly! Wish me luck, fellow chickeneers....wish me luck that this nightmare ends swiftly and the dog owner gets rid of that horrible murderer swiftly!

Not that it can reverse the damage, but I am glad at least that your neighbor recognises the problem and is working to a solution. It is so sad to read the stories on here where the dog owners are total jerks.

Sending healing vibes your way for the birds that made it through the attack.

Thank

Thank-you for sharing that story. That's so funny, and sad. I love when my dad shares some of his funny Viet Nam stories, and my brother shares some of hi funny Afganistan stories. The things guys do to get a laugh in the middle of war...
Thank you to all the kind people who enjoyed my Father's story.. Memorial Day is always so poignant to me, and it helps to recall some of my Father' stories, and to share them with friends... Will
Nova I am so sorry......and yes, I would go after the neighbors for the cost of your flock and contact animal control and the deputy sheriff's office in your area regarding that dangerous dog and the gross negligence of it's owners.

There may be civil penalties (cost of your loss plus fines, damages) that apply regarding this situation. That thing should not be able to roam the neighborhood freely and yes, I would worry about your family too.....

I agree.. But it may be hard to get anything concrete done without the auhorities being involved... If it is insde your fenced yard, you can legally shoot it, but there may be repercussions from the law enforcement people for discharging a weapon inside the city limits... Will

Oh, that just makes it worse! Your poor geese! I actually feel sick to my stomach just reading this. I can't begin to imagine what you are going through!

I don't trust 2 of my dogs. My little cocker spaniel is fine with them, my lab mix likes to eat them...literally, and my boxer wants to play with them. My chickens are locked tight in their coop/run until about 2 or 3, then the dogs get locked up and the chickens have reign of the yard until sundown. They put themselves to bed, all I have to do is lock 'em up and let the dogs out. Early on, my lab mix figured out how to open the brooder and let my 3 pullets out. She ate one and left the others alone. Later, she broke into the coop and killed a BCFM. I saw her get the Marans out, but she was swift in breaking the chook's neck. She wasnt on a killing spree like that Pitt bull mix, she just chose one and snap. She dropped the bird and layed down when I scolded her. There was no visicious intent, so I kept her. In all honesty, she'd probably be fine with them now that she knows they are not a meal, but I'm not taking a chance. She's an 80 lb bird dog and I don't believe that instinct will ever leave her. I keep her because she's as sweet as can be (if you're not a chicken) but she's big, and has a big bark, so she helps keep us safe. Well, that's my dog rant.

Loved the story, too! Thank you for sharing!

Yes, file a report. I believe you can legally shoot if your life is threatened. If I saw that dog on my property again, I would definately fear for my life and that of my young children. With the dogs history, I don't think it would be a problem.

Responded in quote...can't fix it, sorry.:/

Ohhhhhhh, NOVA!!!!!!! I am so very, VERY sorry to hear this.
My heart goes out to you. My birds are my pets. I know a lot of people grow them for food, and that's cool, but mine are my pets and it just hurts me when they die.
I have lost two of my girls since October, and one was to our stupid dog. I still hate that dog and it's been since mid-March. She snuck up on, and killed my blind hen, when I wasn't looking. I know it's my fault that dear Flash got out and into the dog area........I guess I wasn't paying close enough attention that day, as I was dealing w/our new chicks......but it STILL hurts. I feel so bad for you. Many {{{{hugs}}}} to you.
