Arizona Chickens

Hi all.
I haven't been able to be around too much lately.
So many things going on...........end of the kid's school year, new "baby" birds (one that I had to nurse back to health), being rear-ended by someone NOT paying attention to the giant, flashing, crosswalk sign that I was stopped at in late April, etc............ It has been a LONG 2012 so far!!! I still lurk, from time to time, when I can. Things have just been CRAZY. I am sorry for all of those who have lost their birds recently. We have had our losses here the past several months. We also, sadly, lost our funny "Chicken Cat", Cuddles, to coyotes (we think) back in January.

A rough time around here.

Anyway............
I'm here to say "Hi" and to quit just lurking.
I am also hoping that someone might know if there is a home in Tucson that will take some young roos.
So far, two of our chicks have grown up up enough to know that they are definitely NOT female. I don't think I will EVER get babies again.
You have to put waaaaaaaaaaaay too much time, energy, and heart into them, only to have them crow one morning.
I swear I will never listen to the kids demand the "cute ones" and will only get known pullets! We are w/in the city limits, and I know it's just a matter of time 'til a neighbor will complain.
I'm beside myself this morning and am now on the quest to locate good homes for them. I had to go through this once before, several years ago now, and it just killed me to give up
Chick-zilla. He was a handsome, and good bird..........BUT, he crowed a lot. I got the neighbors to be okay with that (I would cage him every night until about 10AM, then let him out), but then he started to attack my son. Not acceptable. So, here I am again!
If anyone has ANY leads, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hope you all had a wonderful holiday.
Back to the 'grind' today.

Memorial Day always reminds me of a story my Dad used to tell.. As most of you know, my Dad was a half-track
driver in an antiaircraft unit in Patton's army.. He had a friend named Frenchy, and every time they pulled
into a french town, Frenchy would sneak off and steal eggs from the farm houses, (he loved fresh eggs).. One
night, he came back with two chickens under his arms, saying "The little b*****ds wouldn't lay, so I brought
them along".. Dad tried to explain to him about chickens, but he would only say "I don't care what kinda
chickens they are, if they won't lay, I'll eat em".. So, that night, they cooked those ROOSTERS for dinner...

Shortly after that their half-track was bazookaed in an ambush, and Dad was injured too badly to walk, and
when the Germans captured them, Frenchy was one of the two guys who helped carry him.. He said" You sure are
a lot heavier than them roosters.".. Dad said, " Good thing we don't have that pot any more".. They were
rescued on their way to the POW camp, and Dad got sent home.. He survived the war, but sadly, Frenchy didn't..
He died just outside Berlin, three days before the war ended...

Haven't been around much and not time to catch up on the last 10 pages. Found out this weekend that one of the roosters from my original 8 that I sold, laid 3 eggs last week. He/she wasn't a roo. Grrr. My 5 remaining that were visually identified as hens have NOT laid any eggs yet. They are nearly 6 months old. Now that I know a hatch mate has laid, I am really hoping these 5 plus the younger 3 will start soon. I am now wondering if the other two 'roos' were also hens. I am scared to text the lady and ask.

So, for the one that was a roo turned hen, I am looking for a rooster replacement to give the guy. My uncle bought the 'roo' from me to give to his friend for his birthday. Turns out this hen is very friendly. Jumps on legs, arms and shoulders to be petted, rides the dogs backs, and has a great personality. I'd like to find a free rooster to give to my uncles friend. If you have one, please PM me, I live in far east Mesa and work in Central Phoenix. Would like something near or in between.

I wish I was a bit closer, Selena. I'd sure give you a roo. I'm in Tucson, though.
I just found out that two of my March chicks are roos. They both just started crowing.
I'm soooooo sad about it. I will eventually have to give them up, as I am w/in the city limits.

Good luck with your search!
Cheers,
Stacy

Nova, obviously the guy knows the dog is bad, but finding a new home unless they keep it contained will lead to more problems and I doubt they can rehome without saying they are blood thirsty, have you called it in?

I had 5 cockers, now down to 4, I will not trust them anywhere near my birds...and now lock them in the house when I go feed just in case....

Poor little quail, lost another blond in the brooder...lost one I saved in the incubator..they are way to sensitive...
