Arizona Chickens

I have sat quiet for too long. Pitbulls are like any other dog. It is how you treat and raise them. I have pitbulls and have for over 14 years. I have also worked with 2 different rescue groups and fostered pitbulls. my worse case was a starved to near to death that they used a cattle prod on and locked in hot cars for punishment. It was litterally a bag of bones when I got him and he would not come near people at all. he was rehabitlitated and we had him around several kids whom he loved. he is the only thing that got me through a divorce. It is also the media. If you call the news and says a lab bit you they dont care, but say a pitbull and they will be right over with their cameras. For several years the number one dog on the bite list was golden retreivers.

You should research the Michael Vick dogs. alot of them are now therapy dogs. They had a huge right up in sports illustrated a few year back. Those dogs where elecrocuted, hung, and shot if they didnt win. But the #&^$ goes on to be in the NFL and make millions of dollars.

I am sorry but I am sick of this negative conatation with pitbulls. It is like saying all mexicans are in the drug cartel or all african americans are gangsters. I have literally fostered over a hundred pitbulls, but Just last week I got attacked by a chiweenie...and it made me bleed, but that doesnt mean that all chiweenies are sharks.
I have to agree with you . lets start putting the owners responsible for theyre pets and if you know your dog is aggressive to humans and other animals it your responsiblity to make sure they are secure in theyre own yards , I dont care what kind of pet it is there is good and bad in every breed , heck ive even had a bad horse bite my arm almost completely off but I dont think ALL MORGANS are bad.. My daughter has a pit and my toy chihuahua used to hang from his lip when she was teething as a pup. . once my grandson was born , the pit never left his side and is the best babysitter .Dont get me wrong Im very sorry about what has happened to Novaleighs flock due to the dogs actions but put the owners responsible too.My nieghbors dog keeps jumping his fence and has been trying to dig under mine for two week and ive taking the dog home repeatedly and the owner still allows the dog to roam the neighborhood and I know its just a matter of time before something happens . ive talked to the guy several times now when returning his dog but he is pushing my good nature. He is a Bad Pet Owner !

GoldBarRanch...oh noes! Do you have a plan of action for the dog? I wish I would have made one BEFORE anything ever happened. Because when chicken poo did hit the fan, I was unprepared and uninformed of my legal rights in the situation. I know out here in the country, dog owners seem to think letting their dogs run all over like a pack of coyotes is perfectly acceptable. Turns out, that is not the case. They must be confined to the owners property, and if they are not, the owner is fined. All dogs must be registered, if they aren't, the owner is fined a hefty fee. If the dog is reported out and about off the owners property and leash free for three times, the dog is confiscated. Start the reports going on file my dear friend. I know all of this now, and I sure am going to use it!

This person has had 3 dogs removed last year because he had them chained in a field without shade or water repeatedly. Now he has another dog hes not taking care of. Why do these people even get a pet? I really do feel bad for this dog because of the owner not being responsible. I hate to say it But I may have to make a call. The last time I took the dog home the guy said he was going to put barbwire so his dog wouldnt dig out. I just wanted honistly to take the dog home with me and find a new owner for it.
YIKES IS THIS GUY FOR REAL

Where would one call to report to? Thanks

Quote: WHY ON EARTH would this person be allowed by law to have another dog, let alone ANY pet! That really makes me mad. I dont understand why something cant be done legally to keep jerks like that from owning pets! What happened to 3 strikes and you are out! Can you call the Sheriff department or animal control or something? Good luck and I hope I never have a problem like this as I would probably take it in my own hands.

what an amazing looking dog! WOW!

It's all in the way the dog is treated and trained. This is why I don't take my dog to the dog parks since no one knows how to train their dogs to be around other people and dogs. No it isn't cute that your dog not matter the size is jumping up at me because it wants to play. Dogs are dogs, not people. If a dog thinks it can jump up on you then it thinks it is equal to you and has no problem attacking you if it is put in a situation that it thinks it's being threatened. Self defense. Where am I going with this? I see comments like what if there were kids. If the dog is trained properly then it will know that kids are superior to it and will respect them. I see comments about what a terrible beast the dog is. As sad as it is that there were poultry fatalities, it is a dog. It was most likely not trained to respect birds. It's instincts are that of a hunter and to kill. That's what dogs do. Even poodles and pomeranians were bred as hunting dogs. What we generally associate sheep dogs with would attack sheep if given the opportunity and not trained to be a sheep dog. These are animals we are dealing with and enjoy. I completely agree with Journey's comments and I hope that we can all understand that these are wild creatures we choose to raise, chicken and dog, and that we don't condemn the dog for doing what nature tells it to do or rather what it was never told not to do.

I've read many posts on this forum about successfully living with dogs and chickens and then there are posts of this nature. I have two dogs that were not raised from the start around chickens. I've attempted to train them to be peaceful with the chickens and nearly lost a couple of the birds the first time, but it is getting better. I still never leave the dogs alone when they have access to the birds. I don't think I could ever feel comfortable doing that unless the dogs were raised as puppies around the birds.

I hope no one takes offense to this post. I'm just trying to put it all in perspective. Somebody has to stick up for the dogs.

I do agree. One of the worst things is that to many people have pits that have no idea how to raise them. So goes for any of the big dogs like Dobies, Rots, and GSD. The owners teach them to turn on when the thing is that is nature to them from their breeding. What is important is for the dog to learn to turn off when that is needed. All these breeds can be loving if socialize correctly and trained.
I think all large aggressive type dogs [ and I agree the most nasty biters are the small dogs but they don't have the ability to kill a child] should have to be trained and pass the Good Citizenship Dog [GCD] test by the time they are two years old. Instead of banning them from communities and insurances.
Of corse this is a big subject and I could go on and on but this is a chicken forum!

Speaking of chickens!

I put Hoppy back out last night. She seems to be doing well.

The drip has been gone for several days and her eye swelling is all but gone.

I wonder if I'd have gotten Tylan into her siblings at the onset if I would have lost/euthanized those six chicks???
