Is it ok to eat an egg that has a crack in it or does a crack allow bacteria to grow at a more rapid pace? My Brahma laid an egg the other day (her 3rd one) in the coop instead of in the nest boxes and I think it got stepped on. Has a slight crack and chip in the shell. Nothing leaked out though. Just wondering if it is ok to eat or should I just toss it?

I scramble these along with the shells and feed them back to the chickens.

Used to get a lot of cracked eggs before I tweaked my nest boxes. The chickens would scratch out all the nest material and drop their eggs onto the bare wood of the box, cracking the tip of the egg in the process. Finally lined the nest boxes with pieces from an old coir doormat and threw some straw in on top. That stopped the eggs from breaking when they were laid, but then the hens began scratching the eggs out along with the nest material.

The other day I built up the front lip of each box and now all the nest material stays inside the nest. No more cracked eggs!

I always just give any cracked eggs to my cats, just to be safe. My cats love them and I have plenty of uncracked eggs for the rest of us.

My question about wither or not a ceiling fan was considered a draft was never answered. When you are incubating eggs.

Can anybody tell me if its true that you shouldn't house turkeys with chickens?

Not sure. I have been told that opening doors can cause one in a small room. so maybe.

Fuzzybird, I'm not sure about a draft in your situation, (not really enough information).. I have a 12 x 20 coop, with the east side open, (wired), and I have an outdoor (patio) ceiling installed.. It runs on med speed all summer, day and night.. I don't have any chicks, but it does not seem to bother my old birds.. Of course, I have a 9' ceiling, so it is too high for those fat old girls to hop up on, (no carousel rides allowed).. I don't know if this answered your question, or even helped, but remember, moving air is not necessarily a draft, and still air can be detrimental in your summer heat.. Every situation is different,and you need to work it out for your location... Will

Thanks Will. You have turkeys. Would you say chickens and turkeys living together is OK? I read where the chickens can give turkeys black pox. Maybe that depends on the state if that is a problem?
