Arizona Chickens

Thanks for saying what I've been thinking! I have been lurking for a couple months and this forum seems like a tough nut (or egg) to crack.
I'm from up north by Prescott and am new to chickens. I have an 8 yr old daughter that is sharing this wonderful chicken experience with me (my hubby is indifferent, but very supportive of my animal obsessions). We have 3 16 wk old pullets (2 barred rocks and a blue andalusian) and 2 7 wk old gold sexlink pullets. I had no idea what wonderful and fun pets chickens were!!! Ours live in a converted horse stall with a newly constructed outside run for the daytime. We live surrounded by BLM land, so predators are a huge concern, and I'm not brave enough to free range the girls yet. Please, accept me into the "club" and I'll keep doing my chicken math homework!

Everyone around here is pretty laid back - it just seems like they're growling.

Sit back and enjoy the show!

Another newbee here. We got our 5 babies 2 weeks ago. We also had 3 older girls adopt us (they were not claimed with the "found chickens" signs we posted). I've posted pics below!

5 baby chicks in their shipping box: white rick, buff orp, gold lace wyandotte, silver lace wyandotte, and speckled sussex.

They're now about 2.5 weeks old!

Here are the 3 that adopted us unexpectedly, 1 RIR and 2 mystery hens. The RIR is laying about 5 eggs per week, but nothing from the other 2.

A few questions for the experts....when can I put the babies outside? Do they need special care to keep them cool (frozen water jugs, other)? When can the older girls and the chicks be put together? So far having all 8 of them has been so much fun for all of us! They're more entertainment that we expected.
Welcome UDub!

You found a great place!

I noticed Gretchen's sister having a rattly/wattery cough/sneeze a day or so ago.

I attributed it to her inhaling a piece of cold honey dew.

Whilst saying goodby to my cluckers I noticed the cough again. I brought out the Control Tower and she said we should probably isolate her.

So now we have a full size chicken in the brooder, in the bath tub.

and Tammy is going to feed, water and shoot her up with Tylan for the next three days while I'm gone.

I have the best wife ever!

16 weeks old pullets=Eggs soon!!! Seems like my Rocks started laying around 22 weeks or so.

Don't let the disagreements scare you off. Yes, you will find a variety of opinions here.....but Hostility?? I've been around awhile now, and haven't seen any true hostility.

With lots of shade and predator protection, your chicks can probably go out anytime. Make sure they can't slip out through your fencing. You will know if they need frozen water jugs. Hot chickens are pretty obvious....panting, wings spread open, lethargic. It's recommended that you wait until 14 weeks to put the chicks in with a flock.....but every situation is different. I try to wait the 14 weeks, but sometimes coop space is a problem and I introduce them earlier. It's best to pick a day that you can keep a close eye on everyone and separate them if necessary.

In the pic it looks like maybe the 2 mystery hens have green legs?? If so, you have Easter Eggers and might get some blue/green eggs. That would be cool. The one in front looks like it has some kind of a rose or flat long pea comb?? and I can't tell what kind of comb the one farther back has.

Your chicks are adorable!!

You know we will want to see pictures.....and not JUST of chickens!!!

FuzzyBird- I don't think a ceiling fan in Summer would be considered a draft. Your incubator should be fine.

A sight that tops the cute charts.... a very cute and fluffy silkie dancing about in cool early morning across the yard. I love my chickens

I took note from Mikey and gave her a hair cut so she can see now. She loves looking at things such as blades of grass and dew drops.
