(I think Mikey meant that you live so far north it is Alaska)

How cool! I need to try this. What are the seeds you are growing and where do you get them? Just curious how I can do this too. I love this!
Kris

Right now I'm sprouting hard, red wheat (from Azure Standard, but found at my local organic stores in bulk section too) and BOSS (black oil sunflower seeds) for all of the critters (chicks, horses, cats and dogs). You can sprout almost any whole seed, but some sprout better at our warmer temps. I sprout mung beans (chickens LOVE these too) and a mix of alfalfa/broccoli/clover/radish seeds for myself in the kitchen too. Sprouting greatly increases nutritional value and digestibility. I was sprouting oats for the horses prior ( bought at CalRanch as feed whole oats), but it's too warm to sprout them now. There's lots of info on the net about sprouting, just google what you want to sprout for instructions, or PM me.

I'm sorry to hear of the losses and sad news on here the past week

, but I do want to share some good news -

Things have been chick crazy here, which is wild because of the heat. In the last 3 days we have had 4 chicks hatch under 2 broodies.... A couple of them we thought were quitters but surprise!

The broodies are being wonky so we brought the babies inside, 2 after hatching and 2 while pipping (not ideal of course, but I thought safer).

Here we have 2 EE/Serama crosses, 1 OEGB/Serama and 1 Modern Game (or maybe OEGB)/Serama. They all ate and drank in their first 5 hours after hatching which I thought was pretty wild...maybe because of the heat they needed 'fuel' more quickly? They are now brooding inside and living the good life....

Yay fuzzybutts!

Thats aweful im so sorry for your loss. We use DE here to keep ants in check . I pour a cup right on top of the hole almost covering the enterance and in 2 days they are gone.

Pdx2phx,
Congrats on the new additions! They are so adorable and just bring a smile to my face. What a great way to start the week!

Sorry for the losses over the weekend. My EE with the scorpion sting is in the hospital wing of my house. I saw a lot of info to give 0.5-1mL of benadryl to help her breathing. There was no advice on how to give a chicken benadryl (that I found at least). I tried wtih a syringe when she had her mouth was open a bit. She got a drop she would lick up each time it touched her, but if I pushed the plunger, she'd move and it went shooting across the room. Her water isn't an option since she's not really drinking anything. She must have licked enough of the drops from her mouth because her breathing did get a little better. She's still struggling to get her feet under her but is looking a bit perkier. She did - to my amazement- eat the watermelon I gave her.

Good news! Orally giving a chicken anything is kind of an adventure.....I can do it myself so long as it is a banty or a serama--tuck under left arm like a football firm against my side pinning wings against their body, use same hand to hold head with beak open (they do not love this, to be sure), use right hand to medicate with syringe-- with a full size or extremely flighty bird it definitely takes two people!!

I hope she continues to improve with your TLC!!

Thanks!! they are little sweeties....it was really neat to watch the chicks 'motivate' the hatchers as they unzipped....they'd stare at the hatching egg and peeep peeep peep at the chickie inside :)

After I took that picture last night, they discovered the crook of my elbow (all 4 are there)

This is what I heard at 5:15 this morning. Little Quinn is going to have to find a new home unless he stays this quiet. He

That is the cutest little "crow" I have ever seen!!! He is beautiful!1 His brothers are not yet making any attempts to crow but I am sure it wont be long!!! LOL
