Arizona Chickens

We got our first little green pullet egg from one of our newest additions. They were 19 wks old on Monday. Maybe the other two will be right behind her!!!

Not sure if yall remember, but Mufasa (our Ameraucana roo from Mahonri) made a 100% full recovery! One morning, a few weeks ago, I saw him laying on his side. I went to pick him up to inspect him, he got up when I approached. He was lopsided! For the life of him, he was unable to stand up straight. His head was tipped to the side, his body tipped to the same side...and when he tried to walk, he would only go in small circles before flopping over the side he was tipping on. I gave him Tylan shots right away! I thought he would never walk straight, and his head always tipped to the side. But slowly, after several weeks, he would walk a little straighter, his head a little less to the side. Now? He looks like nothing was ever wrong with him! YAY

Did I mention that I LOVE Tylan?

Gallo, thank you for the virtual mini-tour of the coop. You've given me lots more to think about. (I have a half-dozen sketches of possible layouts, and had started to go longer/narrower to squeeze into a smaller space -- that one's out now.)

And it's great to see some good news here (recoveries, first eggs) after all the heartbreak. I hope the heat doesn't get any worse for the chickens.

Once in a while you see some incredible threads on BYC. I've been following this one where a family had an old minivan setting unused in their field. They turned it into a mobile chicken coop. The unbelievable serendipity of their decision is that they live in Waldo Canyon, outside of Colorado Springs. That whole area is in a firestorm right now. When the evacuation order came down, they loaded up the chickens into the mobile coop and drove to another BYCer's house who graciously gave them refuge. They've since had to move two more times. Welcome new chicken folks! I'm still a noob, but as far as breeds go, I have two Wyandots (sp) that are very hearty birds! Huge and with great personality. One Americauna that is very smart and for her size puts out a larger sized egg compared to the dots. I have recently introduced a Golden Sex links and a Rhode Island Red. The new ladies are just over 6 months old and are so much more friendly than my other hens. The Sex Links is the most amazing bird I have ever seen and the most friendly! She is "money" as far as laying goes. She lays at least 6 days a week and she's my lil buddy! When it's treat time, she jumps in my lap and picks and chooses what's best in "dads" bucket 'o goodies and the rest just squawk at my feet waiting for the vittles! The RIR is getting quite large and finally laying in the coop and she has had a hard time of it with the pecking order, but she's coming along.

Chickens are a total blast and very entertaining! You will love this new hobby that comes with great benefits! You will never eat store bought eggs again!

Welcome to the AZ community of chicken folks and best of luck to you on your new adventure! Don't get me started on chicken math! LOL!!!
