I think it's some kind of AZ/BYC Chicken Code violation to talk about hatching baby chickies and not share pictures......

That maran rooster has his days numbered now! He got my hand this afternoon while putting the frozen water jug down to help keep his little @#&@ cool and it was inches from my face!

What does rooster taste like anyway? Is it stronger than hen? How best to cook it?

Crockpot.... I like the slow cook with potatoes and carrots and I like lemon pepper to season.

From what I understand, coq au vin was traditionally made with roosters. Some people refer to it as "mean rooster stew." I've heard foodies say that it just doesn't taste right when made with a hen or a capon. Apparently it's gotta be a roo. Maybe the secret ingredient is sweet revenge? Lots of coq au vin recipes floating around the internet. Let us know if you decide to try one

Finally had a storm! Backyard needs to be straightened up but the chickens are happy!

Weird episode last evening. My Amer/ EE (?) was fine at around 3pm. I brought some frozen melon to them all acting normal. That evening she didn't come out of the coop and I found her standing in a corner under a mister dripping with condensation. I picked her up checked her over, all appeared fine. I brought her out to the grass with the others to free range and she just returned to the misted coop area. I worried about the heat but where she was at it was in the high 8o's. Her crop was empty and she refused to eat. All she would do is occasionally wander from her misted corner inside the coop to a misted area in the run. Finally she perked up just a bit and attempted to peck. I walked over to her an saw a soft egg in the coop by the door! This was not there initially. And she continued to act fairly listless.

This morning she is her usual spaztastic self! She just started laying last month and isn't a daily like the other girls. I'm not even sure she does more than 2 a week. Some have been double yolks and I know she is still regulating, but it does worry me that she should become so listless from a soft egg. I have a gold sex link that would occasionally shoot out soft eggs when she started laying like it was no big deal then go back to hard shell. I really hope we don't have some internal problems. I kinda like this weird neurotic bird! :/

We also had a loud lightning and thunderstorm show around midnight last night. Some rain but didn't seem a lot. When I went out to feed this morning I found my pretty Chocolate Palm, Royal with a compound fracture right at the wrist area. His foot was dangling and very large, in a lot of pain and shock. I had to put him down.
