Arizona Chickens

Who's getting ready for their next bunch of chicks? I'm thinking of getting three more chicks, not sure on the breeds yet, to add to the flock. This is the first time I'll be adding to the flock. I will not be a victim of chicken math! :)
I have 5 Black Australorps now. We started with six and one got suffocated at around 12 weeks. Flat as a pancake in the chicken-dog pile. Anyways, what are your plans for adding to your flock this fall?

I'd love to add more, but I think seven birds is about all the abuse my yard can take. Have you thought about waiting until one of your hens goes broody? Then you could choose from all sorts of interesting eggs to put under her.

Is my coop over crowded? Like I said in the above post I have five hens that are full grown now, almost one year old. The coop is 15 sq ft and the roost is probably 6 sq ft multi-leveled. They all want to be on the top rung but one of them usually ends up on the bottom rung. Just not enough room for all five on the top. Well lately one of the hens stays out in the run area for as long as I can tell. She's still there when I go to bed. Too crowded or do you think she's just being anti-social?
I do plan to pop out the coop a couple of feet anyways since I want to add a couple more to the flock so don't flame me :)

It might be a bit on the small side. It's interesting that it's not the lowest ranking bird that sleeps outside. I would definitely go into the coop tonight in the first thirty minutes or so after sunset and look carefully on and around the roosts for pests (mites and ticks). It would be good to eliminate that as a possibility. Also, I would look at the temperature inside the coop near the roosts and just outside the coop. I can't remember what your coop looks like, is there lots of ventilation?

Just thought I'd throw this out there in case someone was interested..... Down the street from me some one is selling an aviary of some sort. It looks to be about 5' tall x 4' long x 2' wide. They are asking $40 for it.

My husband is highly allergic to mosquito bite's..!!!
To the point that we have tried 5 different "catchers"
Non deat sprays.. Ect... You get my drift..
However finally we got a mosquito fish... Yes a mosquito fish..
They do exist and work wonderfully!!!!
Call SRP and ask them where to go and pick them up..
They put them into abandon homes pools.. We do not have
a pool, we just put a small fish tank on the front patio and never
change the water...
Althought I will this year after they are done laying..

I plan on
changing the H20.
We do feed the fish in the winter when they are not laying their
nasty little critters...
Did anyone hear that bill gates agrees with GMO mosquito's!!
Mosquit's that will carry a vaccine & as they sting they will vaccinate?
I forget what show we were watching, but it was on the news...
I could not believe my eyes & ears...
Crazy... To say the least...

I had heard that about Bill Gates and his world-wide vaccination scheme. I am very against vaccinations and am even more convinced the more I read that they are what's causing a large amount of our health problems. I've never been vaccinated, my wife's two girls are not being vaccinated further and my newborn will never receive the shots. But that's a whole tangent that I could write a book on. My latest endevour has been trying to find natural, healthy formula since my wife's supply is decreasing since she went back to work. The commercial formulas are almost as scary! The crap we give our precious little ones...

Anyway, I'll have to look in to the mosquito fish. I've never heard of them, but I don't have problems with mosquito, either. My pool generally stays a beautiful blue and there is no stagnant water on my property. It's amazing what mother nature provides for us.

So, everyone keeps talking about quail. Are they really worth keeping? The ones in my area that run wild, and we have a lot of them, just seem so small. It seems like each bird would only feed a single person in my house. Wouldn't it be time consuming to process them that it would negate the benefits? I mean, a single chicken can feed my entire family.

That might be a way to get my wife started with the idea of keeping fowl.

There are teas and things that will increase lactation, I don't know if you've checked that out yet, but it might be worth a try!

I received my eggs in the mail today!

I drove out to Pastry's house so she can incubate them. THANK YOU! Here's a picture:
This is my first order of fertile eggs...Silver Laced Wyandotte and Marans (Blue copper roo over blue and black copper hens). I'm super eggcited! One egg was broken in the box, but the rest looked good.
