Arizona Chickens

Just got some new birds. I had 2 australorps, ones died from heat I think (it was 117 the day it died) the other got out of the coop and one of my little shih-tzus got it. Sad I know. Since then i have changed things around, by making a new enclosure using an old trampoline and adding a mister to keep them cool during the sumer. They say australorps are good heat birds but i think theres a limit. if you live in phoenix i think you need some sort of cool down devise.

Welcome to BYC Greg!

This is going to be my last post on this thread. Why? Because I love my chickens dearly....and I have had them murdered brutally by some other dudes pet dog. I AM NOT GOING TO HOLD MY TONGUE ANYMORE FOR FEAR OF "OFFENDING" DOG OWNERS!!!! I can't STAND IT when people post about how their own pet dogs murders their chickens...and then cage the chickens to make sure it doesn't happen again. Why not cage the dog? It was the dog who killed, not the chicken!!!! Consider it animal cruelty to cage a dog? Well, then why don't you consider it animal cruelty to cage a chicken? I cannot stand double standards! Post after post of dogs killing chickens, and people seem to not care enough to make sure the dog NEVER does it again (getting rid of it). I know this post will draw heat, but you know what? I DON'T CARE! I am SICK of a chicken being the VICTIM (MURDERED! and the dog wasn't even hungry..it killed for PLEASURE!!!) and then getting caged. As if the chicken had suffered enough?!?!?! All the while, the dog gets to run free..not caged. Makes me angry!!!!!! How about "COOP" up the dogs? HUH?!?!?! The chickens did NOTHING WRONG!!!!

No heat from me, I'm on your side! As a small animal vet, I have seen so much damage done by uncontrolled dogs- other pets, wildlife, and people/children. But don't blame the dogs, blame the owners: they are the ones that don't socialize them, train them, confine them or correct them. I have euthanized many pets for their killing instincts and it makes me sick. People are STUPID, and that's why I must protect my lovely chickens by keeping them confined. I also have no control over the wildlife up north here, and chicken stupidity, like staying out of water troughs. My birds have way more space than recommended, but they don't get to free range, I love them too much!

I have a 4 misters that goes off daily hooked to our sprinkler system that runs along the ceiling of their cage and a fan blowing through it. If it is 110 or over I add a separate mister hooked to a hose with 6 nossels on it for them so it really covers the area heavy with mist. My guys were comfortable in the 116 heat with it all.

Nova, you have a lot to contribute here. I am sorry about your chickens. Mine free range in my back yard but I know they would become victims to foul play if I were to let them go out front. I guess keeping the chickens locked up would be considered by many to be keeping them out of harms way. Kind of like living in the city and having your children play indoors rather than on the streets to protect them from the few child predators out there. Please don't go. We all raise our chickens, children, cats and dogs differently. You have the right to vent. How many chickens did you loose this time?

So Saturday I took out the railing (the one I was using to let the little ones escape from the big ones & they were using as a roost)

  • and the shelf (that I put in for the Oxine humidifier)

  • and put in another branch roost - figuring that with two of them totaling around 12 feet, they would all ave plenty of space.

I check up on them that evening and idiot is still broody in the nest box, 9 of them are on the new roost (wing to wing I might add.)

and Meow is alone on the old roost. (Meow is the smallest of the older girls who got picked on and turned mean)

I had a talk with Meow (in my best teacher's voice) and told her that if she would play nice and not be so mean, the other chickens would probably roost with her.

I'm not sure but I don't think she cared.

Averaging 5 - 6 eggs from the eleven of them. Sure wish it would cool off...

8 PM they're in the coop panting their little beaks off.

I hate to see anyone go, and I really hate seeing someone's life so affected by an irresponsible pet owner. I'm a little torn on this one though, because although I see where you're coming from, it's also the cycle of nature. Dogs are only as domesticated as they are trained to be. I have seen plenty of pets that are just as wild as their desert counterparts. Birds are a natural prey for them and it is instinct to go after them. They may not have developed a taste for them yet, but they will with time. If you're sure it's a neighbor's pets, though, it is a little different than our issue here of the coyotes. That would be our major concern in my area.

At the same time... From the irresponsible owner standpoint, though, I would report them to your Maricopa County Animal Care and Control (602) 506-7387 or Pinal County Animal Control (520) 509-3555. Start there and see what happens. A dog as aggressive as that one sounds is not a good thing and it's only a matter of time before it'll go after something larger, like a child. It needs to be taken care of. If that does not work, you can take your next step of legal action, which is killing the dog while it is on your property attacking your animals. You have full legal rights to protect you, your family and your property. Depending on where you are in AJ, using a firearm may draw the attention of law enforcement, but they can't say or do much as long as the animal is on your property actively being dangerous. You fear for the safety of your animals and your children. Having previous experiences and reporting it to McACC or PCAC will further justify your actions.

Be patient and work through it. Your chickens are a very important part of your life, clearly, so you need to find an acceptable resolution. Stick with it. Good luck and keep us updated!
