Arizona Chickens

hey az peeps. i've spent the last few days catching up on my byc threads, 35 pages in this case. i'm trying to get over the flu that i get just about EVERY year when school starts. sick or not, i'll be processing 2 (maybe 3) roos in the morning. they have been having a "crow down" all weekend and i dont want any problems with my neighbors.
hope everyone is well in the valley.

Oh, that doesn't sound like much fun.

I hope you feel better this morning. Undoubtably, the absence of the crowing contests will help some.

So yesterday morning about 5:30 I went out to check on my chicks. When I notice a very large bird on the street light. it was sitting there scoping out my chicks. This is terrible a predator bird looking for breakfast. Then another very large bird landed on the same light post. it seem the two birds got into some disagreement on who owned the light post. So one of them flew off. I thought. what it did was fly behind our house and land on a power line pole directly behind the backyard. so I spent a good hour hanging out back until they flew off. Has anybody had trouble with this? I know my father in law will lose chickens every year to chicken hawks but he has free range chickens.

I was also thinking of using remesh, since you can get a 5' x 150' roll of it for about $100 at Home Depot. I use a lot of remesh panels for trellises in the garden. Not sure they'd be sturdy enough for a coop hoop though. The remesh joint connections seem to break easily. If they're just holding up some vines I don't care. But if they need to slow down a dog they need to stay intact. I want to check out the cattle panels in person before deciding what to use.

Just ordered an incubator. Looking for a relatively inexpensive way to deal with the imminent need for additional chicken housing.

I like the remesh too. I so much wanted to get that 150' roll at HD, but I ended up getting dozens of panels over the years at a higher price. I definitely would have been better off with the roll. I've used it for all sorts of things. My favorite use is for row covers. I used to keep my entire garden under them during the winter. I hear you about the joint connections breaking easily. Of course it's always the ones at the outside edges too. The other downside is that they rust fairly quickly. Let us know what you decide to make.

Incubator?

Good for you for being observant! I think that, in general, Turkey Vultures are generally harmless to chickens given that they primarily eat carrion (although they also opportunistically eat a variety of other things). Having said that, I think that all bets are off when it comes to smaller chicks. Things that generally wouldn't go after a live adult chicken may consider the easy pickings offered by defenseless chicks.

Hi! I'm really interested in moving to Kingman, AZ after I retire. Can we have chickens in Kingman? I tried searching, and only found a pdf saying no chickens on small (about an acre) lots. SO and i love our chickens!!

Olivia is not happy to be indoors since yesterday. She sounded like she had a stuffy nose so she was banned to the house. She is not a good patient in the dog carrier. Olivia kept jumping inside the carrier as she wanted outside in the worst way. I let her stretch her legs and then she tried to figure out how to get out the window. I gave in and took her to the coop where she immediately jumped in the nest box and laid her pretty blue egg.

"Mom, can I go out and play? Veronica is waiting for me"

"How do I get out there?"
Oh Chris, you did NOT bring that bird in the house all loose like that! OMG, you crack me up. the fireman would absolutely kill me. you need more grandchildren. i have 3 kiddos right here that would keep you plenty busy, they talk nonstop and get into everything!

Anyone in flagstaff with Hatching Eggs they want to sell? I am up here for the day and thought it might be worth asking.
There was a gal in Whittman who had "breeder quality" Americunas for $25 a dz. I'll split a dz with you if you are coming back to the valley (mesa valley)

She was on CL & I'll search for it for a few minutes

Sorry, she's in Goodyear.

No she wasn't loose, but I did think maybe she should wear a diaper. ( I am sure the fireman would die to see my chickens get in the kitchen. Just leave the slider open a crack and they find their way in... straight to the dog food bowl) Olivia had been "cooped" up in the crate all Saturday and Sunday morning. She was making quite a fuss in her carrier in the morning so I let her out for a bit. Olivia jumped on the dog crate to see what her sisters were doing.

Hanging with Miley

They have almost figured out how to get into the doggie door. The flap confuses them.
All the girls have tried one time or another to go through the "pop" door.

Cooper keeps me busy all day on Fridays. That little guy wears me out. More grandchildren you say? My daughter thinks she is pregnant again. My son will be stateside Sept. 30th. He and his wife have not seen each other in 9 months. Possibility of one too. :)
