Arizona Chickens

Thanks to cardsyourway I will have babies to put under my wanna-be mama hen who has so patiently been sitting on her clutch for Trader Joe Fertile eggs that turned out to be duds for the last 3.5 week. One broke and it smells so bad in the coop. All my pine shavings got wet with the rain and I'll have to go buy some. Can't wait for the mail to drop off our chicks and put them in the hen house. It's going to be so much fun watching her take care of them. She's going to be a good mama. She's lost so much weight during this process. I can't wait for her to start eating normal again. She's a Jersey Giant and she is lighter now that they standard Barred Rocks and other standard breeds I have.

Well the moving and unpacking is done (well, almost all the unpacking). Time to start planning coops and runs. But now that I have the room I'll be danged if I can't decide what to do and how to do it !!!

Worst day ever! Stupid hawks attacked my birds today. I lost my favorite rooster and my favorite chicken of all time! I cried and cried and cried and then had to bury them and then cried some more. In total 3 hawks took out 5 pullets, 1 laying hen, and 1 roosters. We thought we lost the whole flock at first because when my DH found them it was just the dead ones but when I rushed home and went out and called them the rest of the flock started showing up from various hiding spots. Good thing is it forced me to call a friend that is a contractor and he starts the new run tomorrow that is fully enclosed and predator proof. I hate that they wont be able to use the whole yard but I cant go through another day like today. I figure if anything when I am out in the evening and can be with them I will let them out till they go to bed. Poor sophie, I will never find another bird like her

I've never heard of that kind of damage being caused by hawks. Were they Harris hawks?

It looked like a Harris Hawk after I googled it. I woke up this morning and they are back sitting on my pool fence. So not only are my chickens on lockdown but my shitzu is also. Then last night the coyotes came in full force, dug up the dead ones I buried, even though I put them 2 feet deep and covered the mound with rocks. I am trying to come up with things to do to keep the chickens somewhat busy in the coop today.

wow no way!! Bless your heart.. That is so aweful!!!
We are in Tempe and haven't seen any hawks yet..or at
least here in our neighborhood... I might have to put our
Collie out front while they are out.
You must live close to a open area?
Coyote came over your wall? That is bold...
