Arizona Chickens

Bobby, I for one did not get offended by anything you have said. Seems to be a lot of parents these days are so worried about being called abusers that the kids run the parents lives. Or the extreme and the parents half kill the kids! I know there is good parents and kids out there but you notice the bad cases more.
I live with my niece in the house. She is 13 and a very good student. Not into anything bad but she doesn't lift a finger to help out around the little farm. No chores at all and no responsibility. Her room wouldn't make a good chicken coop! LOL It is all I can do to keep out of it.
Lived in Vancouver WA. for one year and the first time a child ran in front of me he stopped and said "Excuse me" then went on. That was not all. We found all the kids nice, helpful and polite. I turned to my husband and said. " What the heck gives with these kids here!"

But this is a chicken thread and enough about kids!
We're originally from Portland, Oregon. My kids are 7 and 9 and I am approaching 40. I try my hardest and didn't withhold spanking. I have tried my best at parenting and still try hard. I can't fight every battle but do try to fight the important ones. My girls have chores but choose not to do them and I choose not to let them have money. If they want something, they have to earn it. I know monetary awards aren't the best route and it may not work for a while but IMO it helps me not spoil my girls. They have to earn the money and buy their own toys, I won't do it. I wasn't offended either. I wish living the simple life was simply a part of life, but unfortunately it just isn't.

@BB, my husband and i are 30, raising an 11 and 7 yr old. we are not offended by your remarks, rather, we have some of the same views. (and i am jealous of your life stories - i think i was born in the wrong time!!) i hope my children grow up to offer something to society, not be just another entitled brat.

@gallo, is there a broody on that nest??

@azkat, wish i could take some but i am narrowing down my flock too, in expectation of future occupants. btw, i hope things are going well at your place.

hello to the new members

just a thought... low egg count and 'molting' could also be symptoms of mites - someone suggested the same to me and i dusted my flock yesterday. probably overdid it since they are sneezing now, and i feel like a horrible chicken parent, but hopefully any mite issues were taken care of.

Today i came home soooo excited to see my chicks when i stumbled upon the saddest thing i have ever had to go through. 7 of my babies were dead. Upon closer inspection it appears that they have been shot with a bb gun. Im not sure who did this but i wanna cry!!! There was 3 still alive and my duck was all good but yet i am shocked that something like this would happen for no reason

How rotten! I would report this to the police.

No broody, just a nice cool place to lay their eggs. Also, no mites; I check them every week. Molting is pretty common in the fall.

I enjoyed hearing your story growing up Bobby! Funny thing is I have a 40+ old brother in law who acts like one of the previously mentioned kids.

sorry to hear about all the bad luck and losses, and I would be calling the police too. Seeing how it's believed to be a BB gun I would be watching the neighbors closely.
