Arizona Chickens

Today i came home soooo excited to see my chicks when i stumbled upon the saddest thing i have ever had to go through. 7 of my babies were dead. Upon closer inspection it appears that they have been shot with a bb gun. Im not sure who did this but i wanna cry!!! There was 3 still alive and my duck was all good but yet i am shocked that something like this would happen for no reason

How terrible. I am sorry for your loss.

Chris~ Looks amazing with both.

Petra~Congrats. I personally would go bonkers with more than 2. I give you tons of credit. I am 38 and could not imagine what I would do if I were to get pregnant.

On a very sad note. Chick number 2 died in my hands tonight. I held her for about 20 minutes until she died. She was laying in front of mama hen and looked dead. I am going to go to the feed store this weekend and get a few more chicks. I was suppose to get 6 but many from the order died in shipment so I only took 5. One died the first night and this one died the third night. So sad. My 9 year old is having a hard time with it.

Could have been a great horned owl if it occurred between dusk and dawn, give or take a bit.

No it was mid afternoon, guessing about 4pm....although the hawks haven't been back today this evening when I was out back we did have an owl. I hate killing anything as there is a natural food chain but predator birds just seem like cannibals and I wish I could take them out, probably good that I don't own a gun.

what is it with horrible people lately??
today i witnessed a chihuahua get hit by an SUV. that driver didnt slow down or even swerve, and just kept on going. i however smacked my hazard lights, then stopped in the middle lane to go and help the dog. it freaked out - of course!! - and i got bit, but its no big deal the poor thing finally calmed down between my feet as i was standing in front of traffic. another driver and his wife came to help (thank you 2 wonderful people) while i called 911. the whole time there are 4 or 5 other dogs in the yard 50 feet away, not fenced, not chained, and on a busy street too. well, the owners put those dogs away real quick when the officer arrived, then denied that dog was theirs. he was taken to emergency vet. just about an hour ago i called to see how the dog was doing (and to see if they felt the need to test for rabies, they didnt so i'm not worried) needless to say the poor thing didnt make it. so many internal injuries - what was i expecting... i mean it was an SUV.
who does that?? if you have dogs keep them safe, keep them in their yard. and that was their pet - to completely deny it so you dont have to pay vet bills?? good grief, all your animals should be taken from you! what lesson do these people teach their kids? (and then we wonder why this generation is so messed up)
if you have a conscience SLOW DOWN. traffic was not to busy to even move in to the other lane to avoid hitting it at all. that dog crossed 3 lanes before it was hit, plenty of time to notice him.
please know i am not yelling at any of you - i am just so... so
ugh, people... i am meant to be a hermit, i should live in a cabin in montana and just go to town once a year for supplies. i swear...

Bobby, you crack me up. Yes, chickens are very therapeutic. Some days they are the only thing that doesn't annoy me. My 9 year old daughter is very stressful as she has some developmental issues that aren't obvious other than to stress us out. I've been working on trying to get answers since she was born but no one can tell me 100% what's wrong with her and how to deal with it. I am a perfectionist and I can't make her perfect. That is hard for me. The chickens bring me so much peace in my not so peaceful world.

I sent you a PM about your daughter, Candy. We've been through all sorts of problems with my parents' foster-turned-adopted children and some friends had issues with their adopted son. We even had some major issues with my daughter that was fixed by removing cow's milk from her diet. It's amazing how many unexplainable health issues our children experience in America and the healthcare industry just doesn't seem to care or pay attention to the things that are actually working. It doesn't make them any money if the kids are cured.

It's good to hear the chickens are so therapeutic. I think we can all agree we need that in today's day and age.

Itsredcandy, don't give up on your research regarding your daughter. With all of the technology and knowledge out there, somebody is sure to nail it on the head. It's torture when you can solve 99% with that 1% still bugging you. Somebody is bound to find that 1% that everyone else has overlooked, and could have been staring everyone in the face the whole time. It could be something as simple as a chemical imbalance. Be encouraged, seek out as many professional folks/opinions, check you and your husband's family history, wear out the internet, and don't take "No" for an answer. I'm rooting for ya and pray that you find an answer. --BB

Just put this video together tonight. Mystery solved! I finished the fence this week and one of the hens kept getting out. We couldn't figure it out so I set up a webcam to see if I could catch her in the act. Little stinker! Her name is now Houdini.

Well, notinoz2007, I'm so glad you rescued the dog (bite and all), and we sound like kindred spirits, we would probably be neighbors out there in the boonies. Too bad you didn't get the license plate of the Jerk who ran over that dog. I'd rather see a nitwit on their cell phone walking accross a green light get taken out, than an innocent animal that doesn't know better. And I've seen it may times, assholes on their smart phones walking accross a green light infront of traffic, all the vehicles hitting their brakes when they have the right of way. It's getting to the point where I really don't want to be around people anymore. I've been in this new house for four years, and have had THREE visitors. All the rude and inconsiderate people out there just keeps me home all the more, and I keep my contacts to a minimum. That's a shame, I shouldn't let others control how I exist.

The mentality of folks really scares me nowadays. Are they on Crack or an overdose of Oxycodone/Vicodin etc? If it wasn't for my jobs, I would probably never leave the house. That's no way to live.

It's hard going to the grocery store when you got irresponsible parents shopping with their obnoxious kids yelling and running up and down the aisles, just totally out of control. Then you got Grandma/Grandpa at the register arguing with the cashier bickering about being over charged for a sale item. Old folks can be really mean. One day, I had some old coot approach me, I was about 100 feet from the front door of Office Depot smoking a cigarette, and he yelled at me, telling me that I cannot smoke here. I kindly told him to mind his own business and move on.

If I could order my groceries online and have them delivered, I would never set foot in a grocery store again. Office Depot even does home deliveries, and have ordered supplies from them, and getting ready to place another order.

Now, if you wanna go out and hit the thrift stores...GAME ON! Then again, I got so much crap up in this joint, I could probably open my own store with all these 1960's record players (Magnavox Astro-Sonics, Zenith/GE/Motorola, Voice of Music) and several thousand LP's, 45's, 78's, 8-tracks, cassettes, turntables, reel-to-reels. VM was very popular back in the day for classroom record players and tape recorders. And, don't forget those well made Wollensak tape machines often used in schools. This camp is a mess.

My hobby is repairing all these old relics, and I'm pretty good with a soldering gun, meter and reading schematics. I fix these big beautiful console record players and give them away to coworkers and friends who want to play those old LP's again. Needles and cartridges are still available.

Oops, this is a Chicken thread. When you move out in the boonies, make sure you have plenty of chickens and other critters that make you happy and maintain some type of sanity in your life. If I had the funds, I would seriously consider selling this house, and get out of Dodge and have a huge chicken palace, maybe have a pair of goats plus maybe two dogs and two cats and a barn. Critters need a companion/playmate, hanging around their own kind, and it wouldn't be fair to just have one dog/cat/goat in addition to the chickens. They got to entertain themselves while I'm away. I truly envy those who have the acreage to do what they may, without out City ordinances and HOA's breathing down their backs.

I think it would be neat to go back to my roots of the 1960's when I retire. Who knows, set up a roadside stand selling eggs, goat milk/fudge, fresh produce. There are also several places in town that have "Farmers Market" setups. I could possibly go down town on a street accross from my office building and sell stuff every Wednesday. ****, that sounds like more work than keeping my regular job.

Folks, I applaud you who are geared toward the "self sustaining" aspect of existence. That's how mankind originated and survived, and somehow, the general population has gotten away from that, but it seems to be making a comeback with Boards like this to educate and enlighten folks. With the increase in population, houses crammed together with smaller lots, and dealing with HOA's who think they are all-knowing, omnipitent, omniscient, putting a choke-hold on those trying to eek out a living to supplement an income, and prejudice toward poulty/fowl, when all other annoying, abnoxious other pets can have free reign...what's wrong with having some eggs and a garden these days? My neighbor accross the street supposedly has an awewome garden, growing kale, collards, cucumbers, tomatoes etc., and I need to take a peek at what he's got to inspire me to start my project(s). My back yard is just a complete, blank dirt slate, I'm guessing 50' x 50', walled in with a 5' brick wall bordering both my side neighbors and the back street/culdesac.

Here I go again, another essay, and can't leave well-enough alone. Need to get a life, but I thank all those who have extended me a heart-felt welcome to the board. Some of you folks are truly awesone (actually all, if you own a chicken

Look seriously into diet. Many children have allergies to milk or wheat or other not-so-obvious foods, which tampers with their behavior. Many parents have the "perfectionist" curse. I mean who DOESN'T want their child to be perfect? Parents have a view of what they want their child to be, and when the child doesn't fit that view, it's hard for the parent. They end up constantly battling with their child, trying to get their child to change into their perfect mold. But I digress. You know your child better than anyone else...don't give up. PM Mclevison here on the forum, she is a wonderful source of information when it comes to behavior and diet.
