Oh, and I'm kicking around the idea of ordering from Meyer's for an Oct. 29th ship date. Anyone in need of Halloween chicks? I'd love to find someone to split postage with me. Ha ha! My husband might say I'm deaf...but that's another topic. My neighbors didn't hear him either. Course they say they never hear him, and he does crow, just not very much. It's why we kept him. He's nice to people and the hens, and he doesn't crow a lot. We'll see what he does tomorrow.

i have a wyandotte rooster that i dont hear unless i am already awake, and he is only about 30 feet from my bedroom window. i chose to keep that one because he is such a soft crower... if only all roosters sounded like him we wouldnt have any problems keeping them! had an ee once that was so loud it was piercing at 430am and on and on sometimes until 8pm. he had to go, lol.

Darn it! This morning when I tried to place and order with Meyer hatchery, it looked like it was going to go through. Now it's showing two of the breeds I was going to get as sold out.

Anyone here in the valley have Speckled Sussex that do not come from Privett Hatchery? Most of the feed store stock comes from there, and I'm not really impressed with them. Looking for a Sussex roo for my friend with lots of spots and good size. He lost his roo in the summer heat. I can also hatch eggs for him, if someone has a nice quality flock.

Have you tried Ideal Poultry? It says they are sold out of speckled sussex until Spring but if you are only ordering a few SS as part of a a bigger order you can call them and talk to them about it. Sometimes they have a few extra in a hatch.

Also, Mesa Feed Barn orders from Ideal so if they have SS they might be from Ideal. Sometimes they can order special breeds for you.

I first have to say how much I love Loraine our speckled sussex!!!
She is the one & only to jump up into my lap to say hi when I sit with them.
She has beautiful greenish eyes...
We got her from pratts... Love her!!

My neighbors are complaining about our neighborhood's barking dogs as it is. Unfortunately, they are blaming it entirely on my two dogs, who are usually inside at the time that they are complaining about. One neighbor has seven small yappy mutts, my other has three Greyhounds. Behind me somewhere, it sounds like the person has three or four. When anyone lets their dogs out, the entire bunch starts going insane. Somehow, being stuck in the middle of all those houses, we get blamed. It doesn't bother me in the morning, though. You won't get a complaint from me about noise. Unless it's the thumping bass coming from a midnight pool party that wakes up my five-week old daughter at the time and is rattling my windows from across the street and two doors down...

Hearing some of these stories keeps me waffling about getting chickens. Why should I be so sensitive as to what may offend the neighbors when they have a total disreguard for their animals' noises and behaviors? I'm allowed to have chickens, The City allows 24 hens and the HOA allows a "reasonable" number, but I'm feeling guilty about the "egg song" that they'll make. I'm sure it wouldn't be an all-day affair, like all the yapping mutts around me coming from at least three neighbors. I have a huge, dirt backyard that is virtually a blank slate for me to create my chicken sanctuary and garden, so I received about six chicken books in the mail this week. Other than the usual brooding and raising chicks, I'm thoroughly interested in all the plants/trees/veggies and composting. Gotta add some shade and goodies out there for me and my flock.

The front and sides of the house has that foo-foo pink gravel and some landscaping, but the back yard is just a typical dirt lot...not a tree or shrub to be found. Surprising, ontop of that hard crust, there is moist, dark soil about an inch below the surface. I will do my research to avoid asking a bunch of redundant questions here. The gardening aspect of it all sounds as interesting as having the chickens themselves --BB

That would be very unlikely. They were introduced to two locations in AZ. Initially, in 1996 to the Aubrey Valley between Seligman and Kingman and then in 2011 to the Espee Ranch in Coconino County. They are nocturnal and primarily eat prairie dogs and require prairie dog tunnels for habitat. In fact, they are only found in association with prairie dogs. Thus, SherrieT's observation of it near Pictured Rocks in daylight and eating prickly pear fruit would be inconsistent. Here is the latest report on the progress of their reintroduction.
