Arizona Chickens

Thank you. By using the fence that was already there I was able to make it 11 x 13 rather than 8 x 13 if it was free standing. I went ahead and used the cattle panels since I already had them and couldn't find the receipt to take them back

Next one will be the re-mesh. Won't be able to fix the roost and nesting boxes till the weekend. They roosted in the nests last night.....hope they don't develop a habit of doing that by Saturday.

Then next task will be dividing it to separate the breeds. Poor SFH roo has to hide from the EO roos.

I checked my email this morning and found my inbox full of pm notices of questions about raising mealworms and notices of comments being left on my mealworm page. I thought, "what the heck is going on?" I usually get a couple a week but something definitely changed. Then, when I logged on to BYC I noticed that my mealworm page is featured on the front page of BYC! The power of that to drive traffic is quite amazing.

Well that's cool. I used your page a lot when I was starting my colony about a month ago. It had excellent information and my colony appears to be going well. It is a bit slow getting started, but you can see the changes and the number of worms and beetles growing. I've got some massive beatles, too. WalMart had some rather large worms, while the ones from PetCo were quite small. All in all, I loved the aquarium idea and that's what I ended up doing it.

Thanks for the great information!

Hello,

I live in east Mesa, we have 62 by 120 foot lot. I emailed the city who sent the restrictions of ....for a coop it must be 75 feet from your neighbors house or for an enclosure 40 feet.

Is the city of mesa code compliant group vigilant? With those restrictions its not possible for us to have chickens. We used to live in Maine where we had a nice coop and raised layers and meat birds. Its a great feeling to go out in the morning, reach into the straw and pull out a nice big egg.

Thanks, Paul

just make sure your neighbors are ok with you having chickens. the happier they are, the less likely they will be to call the city. we have a very small lot, and its a twin home(duplex) so my neighbors are literally RIGHT THERE. so far i have been lucky because they all love the chickens. the family to my immediate north commented that the rooster reminds them of home (michigan) and his crowing takes them out of the city for a moment. the attached neighbors to the south better not complain... its my parents, LOL
however - if there is a complaint you wont be able to comply and they will force you to rehome your entire flock, so make nice with the neighborhood and best of luck to you.

Its 75 feet from your neighbor's house, not from the property line, so if you center it in the yard, you might have enough space. Also, when one of my neighbors called to complain, the animal control officer remarked that my converted shed 'wasn't really a coop', so there might be a little bit of wiggle room there.

I'm going to be getting some olive egger chicks pretty soon. Notinoz hatched them for me after I decided to get rid of my Barnvelder roo in an attempt to keep the peace. Of course, the same neighbors are now griping because my cat is eating the food that they put outside for their cat, so I guess you really can't win. I'll be getting them in a few days, once I finish with the painting and sealing the living room floor project, and get all the furniture settled. As a side note, there are 6 chicks, and if more than three are pullets, I might be looking to sell some of them.
I think that only one of the chicks my crazy CA White hen hatched is a pullet, I'll try to post pictures to see what people think. The way the genetics worked out is totally odd-One of the suspected roos looks exactly like his mom, and the other suspected roo looks like a Barred Rock. They both have yellow legs. The one I think is a pullet is black, except for some white feathers on her breast, and has black or dark slate legs.

Roo. Red pullets don't grow and color up that young and there are definite sickle feathers. Sorry.

Stink. I think deep-down I knew it but this is my first flock. So now what? Is he old enough for the dinner table? I can't have him crowing and giving away my stealth flock....sigh
