Hi All. I think I may have mentioned this a time or two, but I have two flocks, one of eight and one of nine ... well, there were ten, but I re-homed the rooster, so it's just 17 hens now.

The first batch came home on the last week of March, the second came home the week the first batch were moved outside, that would be about the end of May.

I was so pleased when the first group started laying eggs, I even posted a picture of the first egg and how small it was, did you see that picture with the two quarters? Laid end to end, the two quarters are longer than that first egg.

Fast forward to this past week, the second group is starting to lay eggs. Gee, I thought I had more time than that, now I have to hurry and finish the nesting boxes for the second batch.

I thought everything was wonderful, last Tuesday I found a white egg in the coop, since there are five Leghorns and four Black some-thing-or-others in this coop, I thought it was the Leghorns that gifted me that egg. Then Wednesday there was another in the coop and one on the floor of the run, two eggs from these girls in one day. Then yesterday, nothing ... huh?

Today I decided NOT to free range everybody, they all stayed in their respective runs and coops for the day. And when I got home, I found seven eggs in the first coop (the two RIR's and the six Austrolops(sp), but wait, there was one white egg in the coop of the second group and one on the ground in the run. WOW !!! NINE EGGS in one day, this is GREAT.

Then as I was walking into the house I happened to glance under the porch, and THIS is what I found.




FIFTEEN eggs. And they couldn't be more than a month old, maybe closer to two to three weeks.

I know I can check them by floating them in water, but will that wash off the bloom?

THAT'S my reason to write this, not to brag, hey I didn't have anything to do with it, other than feed them and water them, they did it all on their own, but I would hate like heck to just throw them away, or use them for compost.

Suggestions anyone?

I should have gotten more silkies. I want more. I saw SS's at the fair and now want a dark chocolate and light chocolate silkie!!

mama hen, you know that old saying "wish in one hand and s*** in the other and see which one fills up faster" ? i hate to be the one to share the bad news, but anything chocolate does not leave her property, unless it is smooth feathered or some other major DQ for her breeding program.

Oh well, burst my bubble!!! I would love to have other colors eventually.

Any ideas how to clean a sticky chick that just hatched? I had 10 eggs in lockdown, yesterday 4 hatched on their own, 3 needed assistance and they are sticky and not fluffing up at all. I don't normally ever intervene so this is new to me.

when i hatched arizonachicken's SLWs, some popped right out, others took FOREVER after pipping and i think they dried out? i don't really know what causes sticky chick or that look of shellac on them. i waited a day until they were drinking at least, gave poultry electrolytes/vitamins and gave those stickies each a warm gentle bath under running water and wrapped each one and held them until they were mostly dry and put them back under the heat. they are still alive and that was weeks ago!

I think they are beginning to feel at home ! One of my pretty little EO pullets left a pressie for me.........





I made a nipple waterer for them and I swear they are just NOT getting it. I pushed little pieces of asian pears on the nipples and underneath on the ground and they ate the ones on the ground, a roo grabbed the ones on the nipple but no one is drinking. I've pushed the nipples and have the water come out but they just ignore it. There is no other water in with them.

Any suggestions??????
