Arizona Chickens

Hi Sonoran Silkies. I'm pretty awesome :) I moved into the city to be closer to work, I'm enjoying being so close to everything. It is truly amazing to have so many places within walking distance. We planted trees and then made a vegetable garden, but now the garden is where I want the future coop... ;-)

How are you?

Well, if I can keep Drekki Jr (my gorgeous Icelandic Roo) until January 12th, I'm going to try and do an Icelandic Hatch.  I'll save all of my Icelandic eggs for two weeks and see what I end up with... I imagine I'll just use my Brinsea unless I have some Blue Wheaten eggs to hatch and then I'll add them.

I also did the Ornamental Layer Collection Order from McMurray to arrive on February 4th so it should be fun.

"We are now offering a special combination of chicks from our Rarest of Rare Assortment and Top Hat Special which will be FEMALE BABY CHICKS! Nothing like this is available anywhere else in the world! Imagine buying such things as Cochins, Campines, Red Caps, the exotic Polish varieties, and many many more in pullets only. Best of all: you can buy this ORNAMENTAL LAYER COLLECTION and save money! We are putting a special price on these female baby chicks much lower than what you'd have to pay to get them individually. We guarantee you at least 8 different kinds in each order of 25. If you are short of space, or don't like to hear roosters crowing but still want the most unusual of the world's exotic poultry breeds, try our ORNAMENTAL LAYER COLLECTION.s early as possible."

I imagine I'll end up selling the half of them that I don't want to keep and being 'rare breeds' I should be able to sell them easily.

With the 20 hens I have now, I'm only getting about 35 eggs a week. I don't know what to do to get them to start laying.  Got 7 today, but 7 Mon & Tues.  So 14 so far this week. (3 days)

My Icelandics are the best layers... of course I have more of them than any other breed.
Ok any one else like to join in on this deal?? PM us please..

They are super cute!

Hey thanks! We are making sure we handle them as much as possible without stressing them out. Our first batch we never really held unless we had to take them out of the brooder to clean it out. And now that they are full grown they don't like being handled too much. These ones already seem to be used to us picking them up. One of the RIR's likes to jump into my hand to check for food. Super cute indeed!

Billiam, congratulations on the new chicks.

Thanks! I can't believe we were able to avoid the chicken math for this long. It's been a whole year since we started with our first batch.

I thought I'd stop in and say hi to everyone, I missed you guys! I did a little bit of catching up:
Congratulations to everyone that had something good happen (competitions, meal worms on the front page, etc), and condolences to everyone who lost a chicken...

I think we'll be starting construction on a new coop soon :)

Hey I don't know you at all!

(That I remember anyways)

Nice to meet you!

I wanted to thank those who helped me determine my hen was actually a roo. My friend came over on Sunday and helped me butcher him. It was harder watching him in the cone than I thought it would be and I didn't make the kill cut. But I did everything after that with her guidance.

He was only 14 weeks so not much meat. But I'll be making some stock.

**Now I need to replace him with another pullet about 14 weeks. Does anyone in the Phoenix area have 1 or 2 available? I am not too particular on breed - just an egg layer.

Thanks again! As a new chicken owner I don't know what I would do without these forums!
