Arkansas folks speak up.........

All our hens do. I would say 1 or 2 a week. Maybe it's the feed??? We feed layena, but they don't eat very much of it since they roam the yard all day long. They get lots of kitchen scraps as well. Not sure why they lay them so often. We like them though. Now we can tell which ones are just by looking at them, so we have a separate carton for them. Steph likes baking with those double yolkers alot, and I use them for fresh mayo and hollandaise sauce. Yum Yum

My mom ate my first double yolker from my girls.

Hubby and I are going on a rooster "rescue" mission later today. My neighbor got a call from a friend asking if they knew anyone that would take some roosters off their hands because a couple of them were fighting and they were "going to be killed and tossed in the woods" so we are going to pick up 6-10 of them. I might end up keeping one to mix with other hens I have, but otherwise most will probably end up going to freezer camp. I will post some pics later today or tomorrow if anyone may be needing a roo. They will be free of course.

Roche - I have two of the most beautiful 14 week old EE roos! They're blue and red. I'm also considering letting my RueRoo (white EE Roo) go as well so that I can keep one of the 14 week olds that I've grown so attached to.

roche477 you are starting to sound like me

I tell everyone - I ought to have a rooster ranch. I have quite a few - they are brought to me when they start fight or crowing

I have pens in my barn that work great on separating them.

I have some of the following
delaware x
mix
rir
dominicer (sp)
barred rock
maran x
white leghorn

also have a pair of bb red oegb.

I think it is silly to just kill them and throw them in the woods. If you're gonna kill em, may as well fix em up for supper!

I will probably end up keeping more than will go to freezer camp because they are so darn cute!

I think this is one of the few downsides of hatching chickens. You hatch some roos that are so friendly and have to force yourself not to think about their future. Being realistic, the roos we hatch have a far longer and more exciting life than anyones from the supermarket.

Hey Scot, do you share your recipes for thae mayo and hollandaise?

NO

Just kiddin

When I first started making them I followed the recipes to the letter, but I got more confident. I started substituting things based on what we are using that batch for. Now, I really just wing it. I will get out the basic recipes and post them for you tomorrow and give you some tips on variation. I will tell everyone, we are very confident in our eggs so ours are done in a traditional french way as uncooked sauces, but you can heat them in a double boiler if you are squeemish about raw eggs. I think you loose something in the flavor by cooking them. We have made both of these sauces dozens of times raw and never once have we gotten sick. We do use them though within a day or 2 of making them.

Does anybody have any experience raising Cuckoo Marans? I have 2 chicks from my latest hatch that look different than the rest. These 2 chicks have pure white spots on their heads and are silvery white on their backs. I'm sure they are cockerels, but all of my other chicks have had an off white spot on their heads and creamy silvery look on the body. Both of these were hatched under my broody. When my husband brought them in I immediately thought "where did they come from" because they looked so different. There are no other mature roos around here except hubby's Blue OEGB which wasn't even here when these eggs were set.

I have a cuckoo maran roo that has almost white hackle feathers, while my other one looks more like a skinny barred rock. The hens all look like skinny barred rocks.

I purchased the eggs from a member and I have only read good things about her, so I am sure they are pure cuckoos.
