We live in Delaware, South of the Arkansas River....up on a little mountain.....we have right at four inches now! Chickens are cozy and that is what matters. Went out and found them some wheat straw today and put some in the coops for entertainment...they sure enjoyed it.

Ready for spring myself!

I can't believe I actually shoveled snow so the little birds had a place to walk. They just fly from place to place. They dislike walking in the snow. Now they have a little path.

They are also laying like crazy. Just set a few dozen in the incubator.

I'm also ready to dig in the garden.

Hubby came through surgery ok, still in a lot of pain, I think from having to wait so long for the surgery. Doctor says we have to stay in the Annex (ground level) for a few weeks, and I may have to rearrange my schedule to drive him to work. This is the second time in less than 4 months, he better behave himself this time. Glad I decided to stay up here last night, I probably would not have made it in time this morning. Had a ewe give birth right before I left yesterday, one twin was born dead, the other up and nursing well, I hope they are doing ok.
Cajun hillbilly, probably no such luck, it will go from 30 to 90+ in 2 days flat.

Jen,

Glad he is doing better!

Sad to lose a twin. Having twins is genetic and each ewe that has multiple births are very important....and valuable. Was the lamb a boy or girl?

Hey, forgot to mention. We have a 4H member that lives at Tillar. If you need some extra help he may be available. Would probably work for trade. He likes the Buckeyes. You can call me for his info. He already knows you through a mutual friend of yours and his. He is 15 and fairly responsible. He is the one who raises ducks for Tillar's town pond.

Good morning! I am new to BYC and thought I would introduce myself. I am in Garland County. Happily married we have a ds10 and a dd3. We moved last October from town to 3 acres and are just beginning our backyard farm experience. I had family on farms but don't have a clue what to do, and my husband, well, he is a very city guy from the Pacific Northwest. We do have 3 wethered goats the previous homeowner gave us and now my ds is wanting chickens. I think the more I read here the less I know LOL but we have decided to move forward - after the snow is gone. We have 3-4 inches depending on where I measure this morning.

HI, Dobela, Welcome!

You will love having chickens. I think sometimes information overload makes us nervous. Keeping chickens is really very simple most of the time and very enjoyable. Just pop in and ask us any questions you may have.
What kind of chickens are you thinking about getting?

We only got a dusting of snow here in SE Ark. It was supposed to be much worse and lots of events were cancelled.

If we can help, just let us know. Are you wanting some chickens for a backyard flock? The County Fair? Or does he want to compete at the State Fair? Any hatchery or feed store could help you get chickens. Show type is best from a breeder. There is one fellow over at Malvern. His name is David Moore. Has some nice show quality birds. Has beat me twice with his Chocolate Muscovy Ducks.

I always suggest that a newbie goes to http://www.ideal-poultry.com and research the breeds. Not necessarily buy from Ideal, but a great place to see the differences in type and color. Ideal also is like a abridged Standard of Perfection. They give lots of descriptions. For backyard flocks Ideal is great. Some can compete in small shows. But for true show quality buy from a breeder.

Have him research and decide on a breed(s) and then tell us on here what he decided. Any breed will do. He needs the breed he likes and the color he likes. He will stay interested longer if he likes what he has. If he joins a 4H Club http://www.uaex.edu/garland let us know. There are many breeders will either give a discount or will donate eggs, chicks or birds. We will do all we can to help you guys get started.

Here are some sites that will help him get started:
