How late does this usually last? He is on a bowling league and will most likely not finish until 12ish.

We start eating about Noon. The actual discussion etc starts about 1 PM. The swap usulaly does not start until about 1:30 or so.

Hi - I'm in North Central AR and completely new to chickens! I'd like to start with just a couple... Is that okay to start with only two or three? We haven't even picked a coop design yet (or a brooder type), so I'll probably be full of questions.

I'm in the Heber Springs area
Yep, you can start with only 1 if you want, but I do suggest at least a couple of room mates. 3 would be a good start, but once you get them, expect to get many more. They're addicting!

Sure, it's okay to start with 2 or 3, but plan ahead for more cause you'll probably catch the chicken fever!
I grew up outside of Mtn. Home. I still miss that area.

ETA: Beware of communicating with heritagehabitatfarms. He will get you started with lots of chicks. he raises several varieties of quail in various colors. Just don't look into his eyes! Basically, don't look into anyones eyes. They will assimulate you! You will start with 2 or 3....then a few more. That one is sooo cute.... then another dozen..... One day you will start seeing chicken coops everywhere! That playhouse at Lowes. That wooden crate at a lawn mower dealer....

That reminds me. Have another load of crates to pick up! Free lumber is nice!

Chickens are social animals. They really need another chicken to be comfortable. I suggest a minimum of three to start with, just in case something happens to one of them. It is unfortuante, but if you deal with living animals, you will at some point have to deal with dead animals.

Do plan for expansion, which means instead of building or buying a coop and run for the minimum, give yourself some extra room. Even if you don't get more chickens, the extra space will make them happier and will make your chores easier. For example, if the coop is bigger instead of smaller, you don't have to clean it out quite as often.

I can see how they will be addicting! I definitely would like more but I'm moving slow because we're such newbies and because I'm having to bring my husband around to the idea.

I like the simplicity of the plastic tub brooders. Once we have our coop built is it okay to put the tub there? I hate having them so far away (I want to handle them frequently so they like people - that's how it's done right?) but we have insane indoor cats and they would definitely get to the chicks...

Going to Gregg Farms to ogle some chicks and supplies right now!
