Does anyone know how you can tell the difference between a broken leg or just a sprained leg on a chicken? I have a new hen who will not put any weight on her leg and will not walk to eat or drink? Don't know what to do for her. I'm really hoping its not broken!!

Sorry I don't know the difference but I had a chicken a couple of years ago that did the same. We put her in a cage so the others would not harrass her and her food and drink would be accessable and she wouldn't have to compete for it. She slowly recovered and began putting her weight on the leg and is still in our flock today. She has limped ever since and is easliy recognizable at a distance. She is also our top hen, I think that may have helped her with recovery and keeping from being picked on when she was weak.

Update. it is daylight now. I have found 3 of 4 orps. they are a bit tore up, but the mean orp roosters spurs and body is bloody. I am guessing from spurring the dog. i guess the dogs did not kill most of the orps, just attacked them.
Whew, lots of posts to catch up on after Spring Break!

groundpecker, glad to read that the dogs didn't get everyone. Predator attacks are bad but I think dogs are the worst as they just want to kill stuff, they aren't even doing it to eat. Hope they don't come back and if they do, I hope your aim is true.

I'm ready for Spring, but the good think with this cold weather is the snakes won't be out in full force, yet.
Spring is here and the snakes are out! Two days ago I saw one of my girls having a baby snake "snack". They really seem to enjoy snake meat. I have seen them play tug of war over them. I just let them go. I figure the more babies they eat, the less adult snakes there will be to eat eggs.

Thanks glad to know she recovered. Gives me hope she could be ok! My only experience is 6 months ago I had a hen fall off the roost in the middle of the night and I just separated her and thought she would be back up in no time. After a week and no recovery I took her to the vet and she said if I had brought her in immediately she could have set it and she would have healed instead I had to put her down. So I am a little skittish but it looks like I might have to call the vet :( This girl is 11 months old and I just got her this past Sunday along with some other chickens so I don't have any idea what could have happened to her. Could be a fall or a couple of rough roosters. Just did not want to make a trip to the vet!

It is always a hard decision to make. We love our birds and they are pets, each has a name, but we have already told the kids that they will not be visiting the vet. We will do what we can for ill birds but there will not be a vet bill to go with it. We don't have a vet here that specialized in birds anyway but on the up side, we do know our vet and could call for advice if need be. Most of the time I find all the info. I need here on the BYC.

I have an 11 month old Blue Laced Red Wyandotte rooster for sale if anyone is interested. Two roosters is too much for just two hens. I also have BLRW eggs. This rooster is from 202roosterlane that I picked up a week ago. He needs a good home:)

Hello everyone! Newbie here. I'm from Northeast Arkansas, and would like more info on any swaps/auctions in the state. I've seen where folks are talking about Bebe. Is that still up and going? If so, can I get info and directions? Thanks!
