Arkansas folks speak up.........

Well I am trying to learn all I can before I jump in the chicken game. Any suggestions on breeds that do well in Arkansas? I am also working on a coop design and was wondering when I needed to plan on getting chickens? When is the best time?

Warning chickens are very addictive and I can't seem to stop thinking about the ones I want to get next...

Haha! My husband and I were lying in bed the othernight looking at hatchery catalogs. We are definitely addicted and can't stop thinking about what we want to get next too! Why do chickens have to be sooooo addicting!

This is a question for all the Arkansas folks out there..
Has anyone done much research on the 100% English Orpingtons? I love the look of these chickens but so far it seems the prices are way overpriced. Just wondering if anyone has any that are 100% and have showed them. Also if so did you find any good show quality that are cheaper than $100 a chicken.

Thanks in advance
Debbie

Ok thanks Hall Family Farms right?

Yes, that is correct. I know he will be at the meet up this weekend and is expecting to have some birds there. He would probably be the Orp - Expert around here.

The discussion of the American vs Imported is taboo on BYC.

Lets just say if you want a beautiful large backyard chicken buy what you want. If you wish to show them, buy from a reputable breeder that breeds to the American Standard of Perfection.

We have a few Black, Blue and Splash Orpington chicks available below in our signature link.

Lost another japanese baby. :/ Not having good luck. But on a brighter note. Going to pick up a Jersey Giant and Barred Rock mixed rooster. He is a big boy. So I am going to be looking for some more hens. Preferably Jersey Giant, Barred Rock, and Jersey Giant mixes. Anyone know of someone?

My wife keeps looking at me like I am crazy, and my kids keep telling me my dogs are going to kill all the chickens I get. We will see. I have to get a coop put together first though. I know I am going to have to get my daughter some silkies, and I know that I have to get some that lay eggs pretty regularly for the wife. We shall see I am leaning towards the Dominique right now for a starter.
