Hi, Sona!

Everyone!
You get all your work done yesterday?

Well, the way the weather is you should have a clear ride home. The almost inch we had before lunch is already gone in most places. However, the chickies were having none of it. They were not stepping foot out of the coop at lunch.

darrell-sounds like you are on the right track. now think about the egg color you want. do you want brown, tan, white, green, blue, chocolate brown, tan, etc-possibilities are endless! i personally love my variations of colors i get. if you want eggs-enough to sustain you/family you need to look into breeds for egg laying. and if you don't want the headache of broodiness look into that too...

i have red productions which are the best egg layers..only one has gone broody which is fine with me, going to start hatching in April. mine are mixed breeds of this and that, from the hatchery. they are wonderful tempered, wonderful egg layers, and pretty and quiet. i haven't had a bit of issue with these breeds and we just love them all. now you can always go with the fancy kind, we plan on getting some silkies in around april, we also have polish too, and easter eggers that lay all kinds of green eggs.

you can always get hatchery birds, some even sell started pullets, but they do cost a pretty penny. it doesn't cost anymore to keep pure breed/heritage breeds. so you can always check around your local area to see if you can find pure's around you. lots of people have pure's and it is worth the money, but it will be soooooooooooooooooooooooooo hard to find started pullets.

you can do like i did, i knew the hardship to get ones already started so maybe look into getting ones that are freshly hatched or a few months old, get ones that are "muts" easier to find then start building up your flock in pure's..thats what i am doing. i wanted ones that were laying machines, so we can sell and eat the eggs, now we know the pure's we want, so that's our mission now...i can always hook you up with babies in a few months

GOOD LUCK!!

I think I'm in luck! I have a friend who plans on ordering some chicks from Cackle. He's agreed to raise the chicks with his until I'm ready for them. I'll pay him market price at that time. Plus, I'll get to visit the chicks as they grow!

He will order a large order of his variety. I just want either 5 Wyandottes or 5 Delawares. I hope he can just add this to his order and get 'em going!

Snow has quit falling here. I don't know about you, but I'm ready for this winter stuff to move on out of here. Bring on Spring!

everyone is stuck where they sit...in their cars. i'm stuck here at the house by myself while all the rest of the family is in town-stuck! i'm with you darrell!! i'm so tired of this crappy weather.

CONGRATS!!! seems like you have a wonderful friend! you will never be sorry about getting chickens, never would have thought they would bring such joy. i will own chickens for the rest of my life-great education for my daughter. she gets such joy out of them. babies are the best-i am looking foward to having a yard full of them.

so glad you joined! everyone on here are wonderful-if you have questions someone will be able to help. i dont know what i would do without them. most can tell ya i knew nothing of what i was doing. they were an impulse buy but soooooooooooooooooo glad i did!!

I am with everyone else, my coops are a complete mess, my hens are gving me dirty looks and have gotten stingy with their eggs, a banty with 5 new babies is occuping our shop (she has a better track record for hatching than I do!) and it is darn cold! Looking forward to warmer weather this weekend. I live in Mena and we got quite a bit of snow this morning but, it is almost gone now. This constant freeze and thaw is terrible on the yard and the runs. I had hoped to mow my leaves by now, but all the rocks that have cropped up in the yard between the freezing and chickens will make me rake it first. It is so soggy, I would probably get stuck anyway! I hope that there can be a meetup and swap closer to our area later.

GREAT! Hope to see you at a meetup soon. I agree with you. You will love having tiny chicks running around.

Motorcycle ride, eh? Sounds like fun! And not sure about the bikers thing, since we're truck drivers, we're seldom home often or for long. This is the longest we've both been home for ages.

I've been slowly working on getting DH used to the idea of having "separate" coops & runs so that we can start a breeding program of our own. Maybe one day. :)

Man what a mess! Yesterday we got hit hard with that crazy-freak winter storm. My family is still stuck in town at a friends house. But no one got hurt, the car/truck made it with no glitches. They are going to try in a bit to get home. Everything here has a pretty 3-4 inches cover, along with ice. Hope everybody stayed dry and warm...
