Arkansas folks speak up.........

aww! I have never had a silkie. Any raising advice? Are they finicky? What is there personality like? this is a first for me. I am excited but nervous
As for personality, she's sweet. She doesn't really freak out if I pick her up, and she tolerates my 3 y/o daughter picking her up. If you plan to let her out and free range, put her up if you're not out there with her/him. The white feathering attracts hawks. Because of their squatty legs, they can't run very fast, and they can't get under shelter fast enough. Not to mention their poof abstructs their view so they rely on the other chickens to gauge when it is time to run (or wobble, as Poof does). Poof could just be weird, but she doesn't take dirt baths like the other chickens. I get the impression she just doesn't like getting dirty. She's never liked eating bugs either. I offer her treats like meal worms, crickets, and grass hoppers, but she won't have any of it, but she'll still go out and scratch around. She loves clovers though.
