Hey, all--I just wanted to ask everyone to PLEASE contact the state legislators on this bill, to allow "incidental sales" of fresh cow's milk. It's for on-site sales only, I'm pretty sure. Here's the info, from Nao at GreenARbytheday.
PLEASE support this bill at this critical juncture, especially those of you outside of central Arkansas.
Introduced by State Representative Mark Martin of Fayetteville, HB 1114 would allowed the sales of up to 100 gallons of unpasteurized cow milk per month. On Monday, January 26, 2009, the bill passed the state House of Representatives. On Wednesday, February 4, 2009, the Senate Committee on Public Health, Welfare and Labor rejected the bill. The vote was 3-5. The following is the list of the committee members and how they voted:
* Percy Malone (D-Arkadelphia) - No
* Tracy Steele (D-North Little Rock) - No
* Gilbert Baker (R-Conway) - Yes
* Barbara Horn (D-Foreman) - No
* Randy Laverty (D-Jasper) - Yes
* Bill Pritchard (R-Elkins) - Yes
* Jack Crumbly (D-Wiedner) - No
* Cecile Bledsoe (R-Rogers) - No
So, what now? Representative Martin plans to amend the bill and bring it back to the committee. I am working with the Ney's to formulate a language that we could insert into the bill so that we would have their votes and pass the bill.
Folks, I urge you to do two things:
1. Contact the committee members and tell them that you want HB 1114 to pass. To contact the committee members, visit http://www.arkleg.state.ar.us/assembly/2009/R/Pages/CommitteeDetail.aspx?committeecode=430 and click on their names.
2. Continue to contact your state senators. To contact your state senators, visit http://www.arkansas.gov/senate/senators.php.
Representative Martin is working hard to pass this bill, so let's continue to fight for our right to drink real milk. Support HB 1114! For more information, contact (501)249-8425 or [email protected].
