Hey Arkansas friends! Here is the babies I got at Atwood's in Russellville yesterday. I was surprised they still are selling them this late in the year.

Six little birds that are claimed to be straight run "Heavies". They are so tiny now its hard to imagine though. I'm not sure what they are. Hopefully no more roos. DH is trying to convince me we have enough, lol. This makes 22 in all.

Welcome to chicken math!

Very cute! What kind of selection did they have? I'm trying to decide whether to do a hatchery order or just stop by a feed store for next spring. Good luck with your new babies!

I can't be sure what I got because except for black sex links I couldn't recognize them. They had pullets, not particular breed. Straight run heavies which is what I bought. They claimed they were black Australorps, hopefully since I got two, Cornish X which I didn't get because predators are hard on them, and couple of more I have no idea what they could be, and one that looks like a production red. A production red can be any red looking bird for example Rhode Island Red, New Hampshire Red, Red sex-link, etc. They also had geese and rabbits. They had some darling little bantams too. They were all very young and mostly clean. They weren't crowded or pecking each other. I have been thinking about ordering a surprise package from Cackle nursery. I know someone that went to their hatchery last week to pick some up. I will be asking how that went when I have chance. This is the first time I've raised chicks always before I had broody hens that did the hard work. If you want a few chicks (the law is 6 minimum) go to a store but it you want a lot you might try a nursery. I'm thinking of raising some up to sell because they fetch a really good price. Of course the sooner they are outside the cheaper it would be. First you need to know what you want for example egg layers, heavy meat producers, dual-purpose (meat and eggs) or maybe just ornamental. My mother used to raised ornamentals and made some good money with them but she kept them isolated in cages. I like to mostly free-range though and have dual purpose. You can eat the best egg layers but mostly you will have chicken broth instead of real meat. If you just want some pets buy what you like.

Looking for some pricing advice on silkies, my wife and I have some white and splash silkies that we are thinking about breeding and selling but not sure approx what would be a good basic price idea for them. We also have a white frizzle cochin that we want to mix and try for sizzles. We are in Hot Springs and know that some of these birds can be hard to find sometimes. We have a variety that started to hatch yesterday to get an idea of what some will look like but not all will be silkie or frizzle mixes, a white silkie roo also breeds with a buff cochin bantam and they are sitting on some other hens eggs too. Just trying to get some ideas before we are ready to try to get serious, still have some more coops to build
