Arkansas folks speak up.........

Such disappointment. Candled my eggs for the second time. Now I have 4 that are on target, 2 that are ??????. The other 7 I took outside and opened. Out of them, only one had a chick. It must have died at about day 10. The rest never developed. Could have been the shipping, infertle, or my bator. That really sucks.

I guess I will know my Monday. Hatch date.

I really wanted some Goldens.

Could have been any of those reasons you had a bad hatch.

I recently hatched out some eggs under a broody. The eggs had been shipped, out of the 18 I had 9 hatched. On day 10 I candled and there were 8 that had not developed at all, I tossed those. I did not candle again and 9 hatched last Monday, the 10th had died at some point between day 10 and hatch day. So I ended up with a 50% total hatch rate from shipped eggs. I just got 12 blue polish bantam frizzle eggs in the mail this morning. I have a silkie that has gone broody so these will go under her tomorrow morning. I will be happy with a 50% hatch on those

I think shipped eggs are just less likely to have great hatch rates due to the nature of going through the postal system.

By the way everyone I may have some of these bantam polish and the other birds I just hatched (splash bantam cochins and various standard cochins) available to sell "cheep" once they grow a little and we decide which we are going to keep. I am hatching alot just for the fun of it. We are keeping chickens in our backyard in the city, so there is no way we can keep them all.

I would be interested in the splash bantam cochins.

You are first on the list.

I have 4 chicks right now a little over a week old. 2 are lighter in color and look like they will be whiter with blue spots and 2 are darker and look like they will be blue with white spots. Super nice foot feathering. At this early stage though it is hard to tell. They are supposed to be from SQ parents. We will probably keep 1 or 2 of them. I will let you know when we decide to part with them. They are being raised by their "Mom" (Australorp broody) outside and are free ranging + get non medicated chick feed. The Mom is a lap chicken so these little guys have no fear of people. If I sit down on the ground outside they will crawl up into my hands or up onto my lap. They will be well socialized and friendly

Thanks - that is the best kind. (friendly) I don't want my birds running from me

I met Amanda yesterday, and we traded some stuff, with me coming home with 10 new quail, right about at "point of lay," but had not yet laid eggs. Well, I got my first egg from them TODAY! Perfect timing!
