Jackie, I go to the Argenta location almost every Saturday morning from May to October. You are welcome to meet me in Cabot and ride along any time! May-July are really fantastic months. What I usually do is try to find stuff when it's super-plentiful and take it home and freeze as much as I can. While strawberries last, for example, I'll be buying twice as many as I need, and freezing half of them. Last year, my CAFM strawberries lasted me all the way until this year, so I must be planning right!

I'm wondering if Cabot is going to be doing their "farmer's market" again this year. I wasn't too impressed last year, because it was mostly trucked in produce from who knows where, even out of the country, being sold as if it were grown locally. BUT I did meet one grower who lives near here and was really nice, and was able to stock up on things like beans and peas and tomatoes to can. It was definitely cheaper there than Argenta, but not as much variety.

I will get back with you because I would love to go with you. I don't much about Cabot. The times I've been to the farmer's market in Benton things were so expensive you couldn't buy enough to can or freeze without paying a fortune. I remember last year Pastor's Wife here on BYC would buy tomatoes buy the 5 gallon bucket pretty cheep. I would like to find farmers like that to buy in quantity. I'm not sure how well my garden will do this year because we had to start in a new place due to making room for the horse.

FOr buying in bulk, at better prices, we really need those one or two growers that came to Cabot last year. I'll see what I can find out. The CAFM in NLR has much better variety, and everything is local and organic, but the prices are pretty much the same as grocery store prices, or, in the case of some organic produce, fruits especially, higher. The really good strawberries this weekend were going for $6/quart. But last year, I went on the very last day that Hardin Farms was selling their strawberries, and got 24 quarts for $50. I was busy cutting and freezing that night, but it was worth it!

I just hatched my first batch of chicks!

I'll probably have some chicks available for sale soon...cheap!

Most will be Easter Eggers, and some will be mixed layers from my best laying hens, like my BSL and my Delaware.

Also hatched a few Silkie eggs, but I may keep all of those.

I was doing a test hatch in my new Brisnea incubator. Well, my hatch is almost complete, and it may well be 100%! I put in 19 eggs, I now have 15 chicks, 2 pipped eggs, and two eggs that haven't pipped but I can hear movement inside them! I'll be rehoming most of these.

I'll get a pic of the chicks tonight if they all hatch by then.

Here is one little Silkie that hatched, but I'm pretty sure I'll be keeping this one.

Couldn't hurt to ask could it?

Anybody in the Benton/Bryant/Little Rock area know of any job openings??

I have retail experience, and lots of animal experience, and I have a pretty flexible schedule.

Tala, I haven't heard of any job openings near Benton or LR, but there are a lot of stores and shops in both places, including the mall in LR and some resale shops there. Check with the unemployment office of course, and couldn't hurt to check with the LR Zoo and the vet offices if you have animal experience.

Thanks for the congratulations everybody! My girls and I are excited.

I still have one chick to go. It's pipped, and I can see the beak, but it's not quite ready to see the big wide world. This one and the one that hatched last night are standard Cochins. They must take a bit longer than EE's and Silkies. The Silkies were actually the first to hatch and hatched out a day early. Maybe that's the norm for Silkies?

One little EE chick didn't make it out. I couldn't hear it in the shell any more last night, and didn't see movement when I candled it, so I made a tiny hole near the top, and could see the beak, no movement, even when I touched the beak with a tiny crochet needle. We opened the shell and saw that it's belly wasn't just right, and there was some swelling at the base of the skull. Poor baby, but at least it didn't hatch and then die slowly. That would have just crushed the girls.

So as long as this one makes it out ok today, I have 18 new chicks from 19 eggs. Pretty decent first hatch. They are so cute! I'll get a picture as soon as this last one makes it out.

On a sad note, I had a chick hatch out last night under a broody hen, and she killed it. Found it this morning, and took her other egg and put it in the incubator with the other egg that's hatching. Mean ol' Mama! It was a white Silkie chick. The broody is a bantam Cochin. Sigh... I hope the other egg hatches. We'll just add it to the other 18.

Here are a couple of pics of my hatch. My roosters are all really sweet, as are most of the hens, so these are pretty laid back chicks....especially this one!

There are 8 EE's and 2 of my project Ameraucanas....the bright fluffy yellow ones. There is one standard Partridge Cochin (thought I'd have two but one isn't pure after all), a couple of Cochin bantam mixes, a Sizzle, and some layer mixes.

Ok, that's all. I have lots more photos, but I'll spare you, lol!
