Arkansas folks speak up.........

Since yesterday afternoon: Looks like 6 inches in Shreveport, 5+ in El Dorado, 4 in Monticello, more coming in and moving up north, through Jonesboro. Pine Bluff hasn't reported since 11 o'clock last night, I don't know what's up with that. We've been skirting the edge of it with just a couple of inches. You still there, Julie, or did you wash away?

Saw one major road close today because of rain and one train bridge under 5 feet of water! That was sight to see comming in to work. And my buddy's basement is flooded. We are still dry but the coop we have our girls in now decided to leak again. Pulled up an extra tarp and that stopped it. The inside of the new coop is still dry and we haven't even boared everything up yet! I talked with a lady in MN and she said that she used hardware cloth on the bottom few feet of her run and for the top of the run she used chicken wire. Will a raccoon or possum climb up several feet to get to the chicken wire and them have to scratch its way through? Or will he most likely stop after a foot 1/2 or so? Do you think he would climb over the top of the run (six foot up).

I don't want to sound like Im trying to get out of taking care of my birds, I am just trying to explore all possible methods before I jump into something. I have already convienced Zach that we need something stronger than plan 'ol chicken wire. He said just look a bit more and them we'll see.

Julie, hope all is ok with you. I had to pull over at a friend's house on the way home (farm) last night it was getting so bad. This was in Dallas country.

When I finally got home the chicken coop dirt and pine shavings floor was like a wet sponge! Several chickens were unable to get to a perch before dark...I guess the dark snuck up on them with the storm. One little frizzle hen was laying in a shallow puddle in a low spot, poor thing. We moved her and put down what little pine shavings I had. The roof leaks a little if it rains hard, but this was so wet it had to have been from the rain blowing in. At least the worst had moved on through.

I woke up at 3 a.m. and didn't have power and the yard was getting pretty flooded. The water in the ditches was up to the road and rising, so I packed the girls up, feed the chicks in the brooder and headed out. Yep, at 3 a.m.! It's about 20 miles to the house in town. I had to go through some water, but not too terrible, and it got better the closer I got to town (Clark county), so Dallas and more South must have gotten the worst of it. Glad I got out of there when I did, but I have a feeling that I may not get back home tonight the regular way though. I'll probably have to go way around...unless that way is worse, and it may be.

Will this every stop???

A girl I know posted on her facebook page this morning, "Thank God for my umbrella"..........she has a much better attitude than I do!

No, I hope to pick them up this weekend. I just told my husband how HAPPY I was we were going to be butchering our hogs..now I'm buying more. I think I'm slow on the learning curve;)

Nikki there is one more option with chicken wire. Use 2 layers and overlap them so it makes the holes smaller. If done properly the holes will be 1/2" instead of 1". It is more work, and you need twice as much. Still it's cheaper than hardware cloth. Heck you could do 3 or 4 layers and still be cheaper. May not look as nice, but it would serve the same purpose.

Welcome Laura!

We just got power back on about 30 minutes ago. I don't think the storm was very bad, but something happened somewhere cause power was out since 12 last night.

My poor half grown chicks are swimming in mud. They don't have enough sense to go up into the top, dry portion of the pen and stay there. I even put food up there, but they won't stay to eat it. (They do roost in the top, at least.) I threw shavings on the ground over the mud soup to try and help them out some.
