Arkansas folks speak up.........

Just had a real good hatch last week. I've got 8 pullets and 2 males. I like that ratio.

Right now I have some blue red oegb cockerel chicks, some long legged japanese chicks and I guess that's about it right now.

PS: Where'd that platinum thingy come from?

Someone must have given you a Plantinum subscribtion.

Just about any breed will do well here in Arkansas. Just find a breed you like the looks of. I would suggest you attend teh poultry shows at Pine Bluff, Eldorado and Little Rock. Find out more at http://apa-arkansas.com/

As for coops, get some ideas by clicking on my BYC page at the left under my username.

Thanks! we're planning to attend at least one of the shows. Hopefully by then we will have selected a breed to go with.

You might try this breed selection tool from My Pet Chicken to get some ideas.

You can get more info on the breed tendencies from Henderson Breed Chart and get some nice photos from Feathersite. Many of us keep mixed breeds together and do not have a problem with them fighting. I find that the breeds tend to follow certain personality traits if you have enough of them for averages to mean anything. The indivdual can vary from that average. For example, Orpingtons tend to be at the bottom of the pecking order and Wyandottes tend to be a bit more aggressive, but some flocks are ruled by Orpingtons and some Wyandottes are at the bottom of the pecking order. They all have their individual personality.

If you look at the very top of this page, you will see a Coop Designs section. Lots of good ideas there.

Hope this helps some. Welcome to the adventure.

Soda pop box wanted

Folks I am looking for a used/discarded/non-working soda pop display box. Single glass door, preferable with the unit underneath. Prefer FREE! If you see one, please let me know. I plan on making an incubator. Thanks!

Thanks for the links!! I bought a book Storey's Illustrated Guide to Poulty Breeds. Seems to have some pretty good info... now if I can just locate the chicks I want... looks like most of the hatcherys have a min ship... is there any good livestock sales here in central AR or breeders? I guess... what is the best way to buy chicks here in AR...?

Depends on whether you want them for show or just for the eggs and enjoyment. If you just want hens for laying, Meyer Hatchery will ship as few as 3 chicks depending on where you live (city or country). Our Yahoo group: Arkansas Backyard Poultry Meetup Group, is having a swap/sale on the 16th of April at the Saline Co. Fairgrounds. There will be lots of chicks and grown chickens for sale there.
