Arkansas folks speak up.........

1 Decide what you want, or at least give some pretty good criteria. Narrow it down some.

2. Some hatcheries do ship pretty small orders, but they are expensive when you do that. Hatchery chicks are great if you are looking for good egg laying chickens and can be very attractive. They are not what you want if you plan to show chickens. For that you need to get good stock from someone that knows what they are doing. I hate to single out any one person on here because somebody will probably feel slighted, but if you are into showing, I suggest become friendly with Jimsfarmstand. He is into that, has common sense and knowledge about it (his post in an Ideal Poultry thread convinced me of that), and probably knows the diffferent breeders and their stock in this area as well as anybody else. I apologize to any others that feel slighted, but if I were to change my goals and decide to start showing, Jim is the one I would start with.

3. Find some people on this forum in your area and possibly split an order from a hatchery.

4. Find people on this forum within driving distance. See what breeds they have.

5. Go to chicken swaps and shows. Meet people. Talk to them about your goals and maybe find what you want.

6. Get an incubator and order some hatching eggs. Biggest downside to this is that you will probably get a bunch of roosters. Of course, with your goals, that might not be a downside.

7. Find someone near you with an incubator that is willing to hatch shipped eggs for you.

That's all I can think of this morning. I'm sure I am missing somethign obvious. Good luck!

What breeds are you wanting? I know a fellow that will sell exhibition quality Wyandotte, OEG or Buff Orpington Bantams at a fair price and ship tehm to you. You may even get eggs in the box. He will also sell hatching eggs $17 postage paid.

The Meetup swap will be a great place to buy from!

How much do I owe you Ridgerunner?

Seriously, thank you for the compliment.

I do like helping folks. Just one reason I am a 4H leader. I have also met a lot of folks over the years. Just being a member of the APA helps. The yearbook is full of sources. The Poultry Press is full of advertising for quality birds. The Louisianna Expo is this Saturday at Monroe. They have a thread on BYC. This thread for Arkansas folks is also a great place to find what you want. look in the BYC auctions.

If we can help, just ask!

Jim

Thanks y'all!

I did join the AR group (Amanda C) and would really like to go to the swap meet in April... what time will it start and how long will it last?

Looks like I have a bit of research to do!

I wouldn't mind getting a small incubator, I heard turning them is a pain... but looking on ebay and such to find a inexpensive one with the turner- just to have around even if I don't go that route to begin with... still looks like part of the fun.

It wouldnt hurt to check at some of the local shows for birds for sale.Sometimes you can find some pretty nice birds in the sale areas. It really depends on the breed you are interested in.We usually hatch around 150 to 200 chicks a year.It is alot of work but it's all worth it when you are lucky enough to raise a few that are extra nice.

Ok.... these are the ones that I am most interested in...

Ameraucana
Leghorn
Welsummer
Faverille
Sussex
Wyandotte

Please let me know what you guys think... the good/bad. can I keep these together or will they fight? I'm thinking start out with a few to figure out what works the best for our family. Are any of these better for confinement... I'm in the city so these won't be free range...I may let them out to play on sunny days!

anyone know of a good local place to buy these as chicks

If they are raised together from chicks, they will establish a pecking order and won't fight. However, you have to make sure they have enough room in your coop and run or they may pick at one another if they get bored. I'm sure someone else can chime in with the recommended space per chicken. I can't remember the exact numbers right now.

Try looking at TSC (Tractor Supply Co.). They have chicks right now.

If I incubate some and get some chicks will they be close enought to establish a pecking order? I have a feeling some of these guys might be a little harder to find?

Would an 8x10 pen a good sized coop work? We haven't built the coop or pen yet, I'm thinking bigger is best then if I decide on more...

You can probably tell I tend to long posts. Anyway, I just posted in this thread some things about planning a coop that might help you.

I don't recall you mentioning what city you are in. Have you checked on the local laws, rules, regulations, and ordinances to see that you can keep them or what the limitations might be? I'd start by calling the police or sheriff's office and talk to the animal control officer.
