Arkansas folks speak up.........

LittleRock We have 5acres in the (now) city limits(I grew up in this neighborhood) things change and that city limit sign just keeps moving out! We have neighbors that have horses and goats. We have plenty of room for a big pen and coop.
I called the city clerk and the animal control. They told me 5ft from house and 25ft from neighbors house. And they even told me that if I have problems with stray dogs, coyotes , etc. they would come out... hmmm
Anyone else have any chickens in LR?

Anyone close?

Yes, I'm sure there are. Problem is this time of year, they're all busy with.....Chicken Chores! Come on, who is from the Little Rock area or nearby?

I've been reading my Raising Chickens for Dummies book and it has me nervous about salmonella. I have a 4 month old - will washing my arms and hands well after messing with the chicks and their accessories be enough to protect her and the house from salmonella?

I think we're going to make our tub brooder today. What wire is used for the cut out lid - chicken wire or something stronger? I'm thinking we'll hang the lamp above the tub instead of attaching it to the lid.

Unless you have absolutely NO Rat Snake possibilities, do not use chicken wire for this - use 1/4 inch hardware cloth. Those rats snakes can get into an amazingly small hole and make quick snacks of your baby chicks or ducks.

Salmonella is an exaggerated threat, but does exist. Good sanitation and good handwashing are always a good idea, but you don't need to go overboard.

Thanks for the quick replies!

Ann, that threat will definitely be there. Thanks for the advice - I would hate to lose one of the chicks!

And I agree with Jen on the "threat" of all these bugs - it is greatly overstated - but then I don't have a four month-old baby, so maybe someone who has young ones can chime in on that also.

Also, those "totes" with the handles that snap up on the sides are great and a big plus for keeping them shut - I love them for feed storage. Rat snakes can "pry" lids up with their noses.
