Arkansas folks speak up.........

Greetings Arkansas Neighbors!

As we update information on our planning thread, I'll try to share the highlights with you as well. Our barn is filling up, slowly but surely, so we may have as many as 100+ people set up at the North East Oklahoma Chicken Stock on Saturday, June 16, 2012. We're using the big barn just south of the administration building at the Muskogee Fairgrounds.

We had some questions from Kansas neighbors about N.P.I.P. testing requirements for birds and eggs purchased at the sale and swap. Here's a cut and paste of the e-mail response I just received from the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture.

Here’s the text of the response I just got from Michael Herrin, DVM. The rest of his credentials are at the bottom of his message.

Coral Hale,

There are no requirements to have a "swap meet" for poultry, hatching
eggs, or baby chicks. There is no permit or testing required.

Any birds or eggs that cross a state line would require pullorum/typhoid
testing and a certificate of veterinary inspection.

Thank you,

Michael Herrin, DVM

Many of our Okie members are licensed testers. I will do my best to have at least one official tester at the event with testing supplies. I will also let people know that if they are bringing eggs or birds, and they are already part of the N.P.I.P. program, they should bring documents reflecting their current N.P.I.P. number.

United Orpington Club Chooses Officers From Arkansas

The United Orpington Club, one of the breed clubs for Orpington chickens, recently held their elections. Two from Arkansas, and this thread, were elected as officers. New Vice President is Roy Autry, aka cowboygourmet, of DeQueen, Arkansas. Kassandra Price, aka buffbeauty, of Sheridan, Arkansas was elected as the District Director of District 7 (AR, LA, MS, OK, TX)

Congratulations to both.

Glad I found this thread, moved to Cabot, AR this summer with 17 chickens, 2 horses, and a dog to help take care of my mom. Lost 13 of my flock when my brother forgot to lock the gate to the pen and 2 dogs forced their way in and had a killing spree. That left me with 1 BO hen (who managed to get out) and 1 SLW hen who survived with a broken wing. I did have 2 dozen fertile eggs and a very sweet lady from around Morrilton hatched them for me (7 hatched from refrigerated eggs), but 4 are Roos and a hawk got 1. So that leaves me with a total of 4 hens...not nearly enough! So if anyone has any nice SLW's they need or want to sell, please let me know. Don't have to be SQ but do want nice lacing. My mom loves to see them outside and she can't see them if they have too much black. Thanks! I would prefer older chicks or young pullets, but will take just hatched if that is all I can get.

I am just checking in again...still up here in NW Arkansas, near Fayetteville. Still breeding Black Javas and helping to bring them back from the brink, setting other folks up with them as often as I can.

Working on Olive Eggers, and I have a few Ameracaunas and a breeding quartet of FCBMs. Happy to hear about others in my neck of the woods! Check my page for pics, etc.
