So, firstly, "Add" basically adds white to whatever colour you use and shifts it's hue very slightly.
It can't be used with black because black has no base colour or light, which means it has nothing to shift or lighten.

I find that it never really works properly for pale skin colours, no matter what colour you use, so you might have to mix up a good highlight by yourself (a light, almost-white orange usually works well).

Honestly, I think the one with reduced opacity looks fine; maybe reduce the amount of highlight to just a few slightly brighter dots on more prominent areas (such as the shoulders, cheeks, and maybe a little on the nose)?
hmm... okee. I'll play around with it some more. :D thanks.

It's a bit too red but WAY better. :D blurring helped.

Yas, much love to the blur. XD

Create a paler layer (way paler than you want the skin to be), clip it above the skin layers, then set it to "Overlay". It should lighten it up. :3
Oh... oops :p ive been messing with it. I set it to protect alpha and colored over it with every color of the rainbow until i liked how it looked. :D ill have to look for an overlay thing i havent seen it before. Its probably way easier.

"Protect Alpha" is honestly the only thing that I have no idea how to use. I've tried with it, and it just confuses me. XD
It should be in the same selection as the "Multiply" and "Add". :3

Oh i use it a lot. It works well where it is on the computer. Basically what ever layer youre on, if you select protect alpha you can color only on what is on that layer. It makes changing the color of say a shirt really fast. Or if you have any color layer that you have over lapping another color layer and you want to stay inside the "lines" - i imagine you might use this a lot if you want to color without lineart - only coloring where youve already colored on that layer. Protect alpha does that.

Ohhhhh! XD
Can you erase said layer and have the base colour still there? :p

Grervyn the dragon. A little rough on the edges, because I still am having trouble with the fill bucket, (and when I try to correct my mistakes it looks weird, but I did follow some of Taming Master's advice.

Yeah eventually all the 22 mixed up layers began to make it impossible to fix little cosmetic mistakes. Because I put the line art on top, but the fill bucket still filled the whole picture, you could just see the line art on top. :he
So then I just duplicated the line art layer many times to make the color layers, making it become so confusing-mobile version. As you may be able to see, I used the multiple function to add shadow. It worked well. The head was hard to fix, because it was sideways on the neck. I eventually just left it.
