Art School

I just layered and layered and layered over a multitude of different brush strokes. It was an experiment- I usually just cop out and do solid backgrounds. :p
Also, I do indeed need background instruction from everyone who's good at it.
Backgrounds are weird.
You can get the base of a background by throwing down rough colours (avoid too much saturation), then making the furthest bits a really light blue/cyan and blurry.
Honestly though, just study from a few pictures, like forests and houses. You'll pick up the distance blur and fade quicker. (Try not to colour pick, guessing helps!)
If I think of anything else, I'll pop back. XD

Well, seems like a great route to take- thanks! :D

You guys have probably seen some of these, but eh.

@HeavensHens88 inspired me to do this one. :3

And while I’m at it, I might as well show this monstrosity. It took 4+ months and 153 layers and still looks like my normal art style :he oh well.

That's incredible! You did a really good job on that last one. Your art has improved so much.
To kick it up to the next gear, I'd start going down to a macro level. You've got the shading down to the last shadow, so start working on texture. Start using 1 pixel (or just very small, depending on your canvas size) paintbrushes to put in hair and fabric. Then blend them as needed. (Yes, it will drive you insane.) Also, random note—the human looks a smidge crosseyed. For the future, make sure to have the pupils completely lined up on their respective sides or the entire face gets thrown off.
