quick question:

I have 2 articles, one has no thumbnail image, one does.

For the one that does, I can view the article, and then find the "Set Cover Image" option under the Article Tools as shown:

For the other I don't have that option:

Is there a method for adding the cover image thumbnail that I'm missing?

For your other article, you need to upload the pictures you want in the article using the upload a file button, then that should give you the option to set your cover image.
