Ascites? in desperate need of some help and guidance...

I read your entire thread and this sounds like what is going on with my 1 yr old hen. What happened? Is she alive? Did you get anymore fluid out of her? Was it Ascities? Help!

Sad news.

She lived through the night, and this morning she was up and walking, eating... but this afternoon had a seizure and died immediately. Needless to say, I'm not really up for talking too much-feeling bummed about it, but just wanted to update. Thanks everyone for your support and help. We gave it our best try. That's all anyone can do.

Thank you for posting your story about Goldie the Dorking. Egg peritonitis is the worst. Hens are so good to us and I appreciate everything you posted and did for her. mg

I'm thinking she has Asites, or Internal laying, or some form of egg bound. I am not sure what to do, do you think it would be worth a shot to try with a needle? if so, whats the safest place to do it? or, if it is egg bound, is there a way to know for sure? (could i feel it if i go into her vent, or would i need a vet?) any help would be appreciated, I just don't know what to do.

You can put on a rubber glove & some KY to feel if your hen is egg bound. There are plenty of threads & Youtube videos about it. An egg bound hen will walk sort of upright.
Hope it's something simple & treatable!

If the hen's abdomen feels...kind of like a hot water bottle and her legs are wider apart than is normal, it may be ascites. Look on YouTube for a video about draining ascites from a hen. There are multiple videos, watch as many as you need to feel comfortable doing the procedure. I was terrified, really, but it was very simple and made her feel better.

Thanks for the advice, I will do some research tomorrow, her abdomen doesn't press against her legs like I've seen in other hens, and it feels more hard. When she relaxes I can press into it a little. Any ideas on other things I could rule out? Thank you guys somuch for your support! Ps she yawns sometimes and has labored breathing.
