Hi everyone,
I already posted about this hen before, I don’t know how to do a link of a thread so it’s the one titled odd thing in crop and she is also mentioned in my other ascites not eating thread.
I started a new thread because I think she has to much going on for me to save her right now and I needed more help.
Her current problems:
ascites: she has had a huge abdomen for about a week now and I know it is caused by her breathing. No matter the temperature she is always breathing at a quicker pace than the rest. I have given her many things for it and she used to sneeze all the time and more so I got it under control but she still has labored breathing. I knew ascites was coming, I am not going to drain her. I think it is too risky in the state she is in and I don’t want to cause any more problems. Also it might not let her live that long afterwards anyways. I have been giving her my treatments which saved the life on another hen and it has been slowly working on her but she still has quite a big abdomen.
CROP: she has had some odd thing in her crop for awhile now. I already mentioned my thread on it. It is currently two pieces both about 1-2 inches long and they haven’t digested and it’s been a 5ish days I would say. She also isn’t eating. I have given her her favorites treats and food but she just won’t. I have isolated her from her flock for a week now because she is getting picked on and she gets bullied away from food and she already wasn’t doing well so I didn’t want to make it worse for her. She might not be eating due to the ascites or crop contenders or both. I have been giving her miconazole (only once a day) and coconut oil and another sour crop mixture.
POOPS: so I haven’t taken a picture yet but they either are super liquidy brown. Almost like a cecal poop that is super liquidy, she has had those more than once a day usually. She also has a lot of urates and only a tiny bit of poop, she isn’t eating.
Her comb and eye now: I took pictures, I don’t know what’s going on with her.

she isn’t moving around much due to the ascites and she hasn’t been eating and I think it is almost her time. She is only 4 years old and I don’t know what to do.

Her comb looks almost like frostbite, mild, and the upper part of the eye also looks like something freezing dripped on her head. Could be related to the liver failure.

If you're sure she has ascites, abdominal swelling so great it pushes her legs apart and the belly drags on the ground or nearly so, she is dying. Once the liver quits working, toxins build up in the tissues and death is always the end result.

Only you can judge if her life is still good enough for her or if she's feeling so ill as each day goes by that there is no good reason she should suffer for a few weeks or months until she inevitably dies.

I would probably put her down. Once they stop eating and drinking, and others are pecking them, the end is near. She could be suffering. Sorry about your hen. It helps sometimes to do a home necropsy to look inside her abdomen for anything unusual which can point out what killed her. The ascites fluid is usually amber colored when the abdominal wall is opened. Look for any cooked egg looking material or tumors. Take pictures and post here for any opinions.

I think the whiteness on her face is related to liver failure... I live in Florida and I don’t think it’s cold enough to give frostbite.
Her belly is quite close to the floor and she doesn’t move at all.
So is this automatically tied with the liver or could it be from her increased breathing or both?
I do think the end is very near

So if it does come down to me having to cull, I can’t do a necropsy. I really just want her to peacefully be dead. Wouldn’t it just be ascite build up though?
she did use to lay eggs before it happened though. And I wouldn’t mind finding what is in her crop.

The liver gets sick, then fails. That causes other organs to fail, like dominoes falling. Her lungs and heart are failing so she has trouble breathing. At this point of multiple organ failure, she is suffering. You need to end it for her.

I mean even though she has had respiratory problems for probably over a year now? She also use to sneeze so I thought it was just respiratory... so she has had liver failure for over a year now?

Organ failure of any kind can go on for years before nothing works any longer and death occurs. My cat had kidney failure for four years before he died at age 21.

It's kind of like an old beater with an engine that uses a quart of oil a day, but it can still ride you around to where you need to go until one day it just quits.

Ok. Is there anything I can do besides culling? Is it worth draining or anything else?
