Ascites or internal laying-should i atempt draining?

I'm using lasix, a water pill and it's helping. Came across someone here that mentioned lasix. I didn't know we can use thisMy last hen with ascites died after I drained her 3 times. Now my hen can poop it out with this, I won't try draining anymore. Too painful for them. I also am using supplements and antibiotics to treat this one. OPC 95, grape seed extract capsules, on Amazon Prime for under $20 a bottle supports heart function, which is one of the problem with waterbelly, is giving my girl a fighting chance. I believe her issue is egg related so she may have cancer. I also am giving her tumeric, which I break up a capsule and size it down into tiny pet capsules. It is a antiviral antibacterial, antiinflammatory, and potentially prevents cancer based on recent research, Yet it is also a blood thinner so do not think more is better, very small amount optimal and best if used in conjuntion with black pepper and coconut oil..

Drained her again yesterday, went really good, and she's still strong. I'm thinking about trying the water pills, I'll check amazon tomorrow. When she gets full she can't poop well, and her droppings are basically water. She always has a massive poop after draining, she acts like she feels better, she definitely wouldn't be alive if we weren't helping her. I'm really thankful for all your support, its nice to know I'm not alone

I'm glad yours is doing better, mine is going down hill since the discontinuation of antibiotics. While I supplemented the antibiotics with natural ones such as garlic pills, oregano oil caps (I don't recommend this in the capsule form anymore may be too strong). Instead use the one for poultry that also includes garlic, cinnamon, and other herbs. If you're interested, let me know and I'll get the name for you as I have it out in the yard earlier for adding to their water. So anyways, I put her back on antitonight again. Despite adding probiotics in her water, she seemed to have also developed a sour crop as her crop was squishy. I'm thinking about using epsom salt to help with fluid expelling too. It's a laxative so they poop everything out. BTW, lasix is prescriptioned so you can't find it on Amazon. Someone on another chicken group told me they used diurex water caplets (the one WITHOUT caffeine) for their hen with ascites and it works. I find local grocers carrying diurex Max without caffeine, containing pamabrom 50 mg. I do not know the amount they used, but it was crushed and mixed in their drinking water. However, there are those in the chicken group that was against using it as they have not seen it used before. I have no experience with it so can't vouch for it either way. There are also natural diuretic pills on Amazon that contains plants and herbs that help rid of fluid for people, such as parsley, fennel, dandelion, watermelon. I have not tried them with mine, so don't know how well they work either. I continued to give her OPC 95 on a daily basis. Today, I added a 1/4 piece of crushed baby asprin to her water as she seemed to be in pain. Today is not a good day for her. Yes, we do our best and we talk to each other to find out what are people trying that's all we can do.

Thanks for keeping me posted I'm away at the moment and my hen is being cared for, drained her a few days before I left, went really good. I'm sorry to here about your Hen, a user on here has done a impacted crop flushing before, maybe she could give you feedback? I think her use is rebrascora. By the way, what's the best way to give pills to chickens? Hope your hen is well, I'll see about ordering water pills off of amazon, thanks for the feedback! Ps impacted might not be the same as sour, but she might still be able to give you some advice.

I learned CQ 10 supplement is helpful to their heart, which I started using. I just learned there are ascites due to fluid built up and there is another type due to egg yolk being in the wrong place. I attached a video to show what I think it's going on with my hen. It is an autopsy of this woman's hen. I say that as I had a hen previously with ascites. To me, it felt different than this one. Both bellies were swollen, but one feels more watery and the other more firm and solid, which is what my current hen with ascite feels like. I think in her case, had I attempted to drain her, there would not be much liquid to pull. As in this video, the belly sac is filled with this more solid eggs built up. Be forewarned it is very graphic as she opened up the insides. But it's worth it as it is educational. My is doing better after I gave her water mixed with acidified copper sulfate and Baytril. But I know it's only temporary improvement as the stuff in her belly has not gone down. I also put DSMO in a spray bottle and spray the liquid onto her bottom to help reduce pain.

Hello! I watched the video you attached, I've seen other posts like that, some called it extreme eggbound. Not sure if that's the same as egg yolk peritonitis, I've heard of both. I hope your hen is doing well, I figured an update on mine is overdue. She's doing very well, she's up and talking, she even jumps down out of her pen in the morning! She's eating well, and she seems to be drinking pretty good too. Droppings have been normal color and consistency. Her abdomen doesn't seem that swollen either. Her breathing is a bit labored, but Still good. Seems the best thing for her is minimal stress and lots of exercise. In my experience with ascites, it seems like having them sedate makes it much worse. I notice if she's with the flock or put into any kind of stress (like loud lawn mowers for example) her breathing gets worse. I tried to drain her several weeks ago, I only had long needles, and I didn't push it in the whole way, so all I got was blood. Haven't drained her since, but I bought some needles that I had been successful with before, so I will try again if she's not doing great. She only pooped once today(normal consistency), and her belly seems a little worse, so i might try again soon if she's worse tomorrow. Otherwise she's doing good. I've noticed her droppings have straw yellow fluid around them, this doesn't seem to be having a bad effect. Sorry to throw so much out at once, if you have any ideas or experiences I sure appreciate them! Ps: the only thing I'm giving her is some electrolytes and usually some salad and fruit.

That is good to hear, unfortunately, my has passed. Another one, my broody hen passed this week also at the vet after being attacked by something and suffered extensive injury while I was away and her eggs hatched. Please do keep me posted as I anticipate to encounter more of the same with my other hens. I would like to know if others are able to treat them successfully. I pray yours will continue to improve as what they endured is just aweful.

My hen is having the same issue. Tonight I drained almost a cup out of her and she probably leaked another cup. Straw yellow color, a little blood mixed in with what she leaked out. What can I expect now? I have her 50mg of cephalexin and water. She ate some on her own. I'm new at this, any advice appreciated.
