Ash for chicks?

I am cleaning out my fireplace and was wondering if my chicks or my adult hens would like the ashes, for dusting?

I mix ash from the woodstove with some sand and dirt and the love it. i don't do ash alone cause it goes everywhere like drywall dust and can be inhaled. And that can't be good.
