My question is, when hatching chicks from an incubator, why do you stop turning them at lockdown? Do Broodys also stop turning and how do they know when to stop? Movement or noise from inside the eggs? I don't have chickens yet or an incubator.

I have a RI she is beautiful and just started laying two weeks ago. I found one of her eggs in the box this morning and went back out later to see if any of my pullets had layed and I found a second egg from the RI. The only reason I know its hers is because she is a painter. She lays brown eggs with speckled white dots all over the egg. Is there something I should worry about? So that was 3 eggs in a little over 24 hours.

I'm new in having backyard chickens. I have a coop that is roughly 4'x4' with two nesting boxes attached. The coop is inside a run that is roughly 12'x14'. I was thinking of letting each of my boys get a chicken (3) but don't want to over crowd them. What is a good amount to have for this set up? Thanks

Ask a question and I'll answer it if I can!
I am new to this site. So I'm not sure if I'm in the right place for the question, but I really could use some help. I have had 2 hens setting the same nest for almost the entire 21 days (one of the had set longer). A chick started the process of hatching last night. When my husband and I went out to check before bed, I picked the hens up and noticed ants were all over the egg that was beginning to hatch. We quickly tried to get all of the ants off but noticed several more in the nest. We made the decision to put the eggs and both hens (banty hens) in a box with clean hay and move them to out garage in fear that all the new hatching eggs would be eaten by ants. The chick is still alive this morning. I can hear it chirping. Last night while removing the ants I also removed some of the shell to get a few ants out. A good portion of the egg is removed but it still is not completely out. My question is.....should I be worried? Will the mom help the chicks out?
