Wal-Mart has been out of pine shavings for two weeks
I went to Pet Smart and they had pine shavings but the shavings were very fine. I bought Aspen because of the larger pieces. Does anybody use Aspen? It says it's good for nesting birds.
I've used aspen shavings for pet rabbits, but haven't tried it for chickens. Aspen is considered non-aromatic so I think you can use it safely.
BTW, how much is it, is it a big bag? I just might have to see if my WalMart has it.

Our girls are spoiled...and I'm to blame! We've tried the WalMart pine shavings...they are cheap BUT the chunks are too big, we don't like then and neither do the birds (all Bantams).
We looked into the Aspen shavings last night but they are twice the price (at Tractor Supply) as pine shavings, for the same sized bag. Skip went and checked in the back and there were two pallets of pine shavings back in the storage area of the store. I wonder just how many $10.00 bags of Aspen shavings people have bought because they didn't think to ask an employee!
Will post pics shortly of the size difference in pine shavings.
Aspen is actually better for bedding in other animals like rabbits and hamsters because it doesn't cause upper respiratory issues like the pine. However I don't know if it makes a difference in birds.
