I put two big bags of some damp conifer bark stuff in my chicken run today, then an hour later when I went to give them more food one of them was standing in the corner hunched over, despite running around earlier in the day. She then went to bed in the house (which is strange because she always sleeps on the roof of their house) and lay in the egg box with her eyes closed the whole time - she wouldn't even open them when I touched her head or anything. She is not gasping for air so far but she didn't want to eat or drink when I last checked her... I have now removed all of the bark just in case that was the problem. I researched the type of bark I used for use with chickens (it was some decorative bark for gardens) and a few sites said it can release harmful spores.

I'm not sure how old she is, but we've had her for over a year and I think she was already a couple years old then...

Could she really have contracted aspergillosis within 2 hours of being in contact with the bark??? What could I do?

EDIT: hello to anyone who is coming here from the future and looking for answers, I made a new thread about this topic here which might be more useful

No, IMO it would be impossible for her to get ill after only 2 hours of contact. Likely there is something else going on. And the timing is just coincidental.

Please do a thorough exam on her to see if you can find other possible causes of her issue. Place her in a safe place so you can watch her and protect her from the flock. And monitor her water/food intake and poops.

Alright thank you, she has been drinking a lot of water recently so her poop has been a bit runny, although it looks normal otherwise. She was also similar to this a couple of weeks ago when it got really hot but recovered and acted normal for a while after having an impacted crop which I sorted out. I am wondering if maybe it's the same thing now.

Runny yellow- clears poops usually means not eating. Drinking a lot of water is a good thing. Heat exhaustion makes them pant and wing spread.

So sounds like it's the same thing, maybe she ate the bark - I lost one of my hens to gluttony, she ate everything:(

Good luck with her, hope she's better tomorrow.:hugs

Runny yellow poop could also be egg yolk peritonitis, but hers is just runny and still normal coloured and I saw her eating a lot earlier today.

Thank you, I'll have to check her as early as I can in the morning.

Okay bad news I just checked on her this morning and she is not good.. she hasn't gotten out of the house and she cannot stand up.. I noticed in her mouth she has lots of saliva or something.. her comb has turned quite dark

she still has very runny poo and I know she hasn't eaten this morning as she has just stayed in the house lying down on the floor

I'm so sorry, sounds like she is not going to make it :hugs

If it were me (and it is, cause I'm tube feeding one of mine) I would bring her inside and start hydrating her immediately, then tube feed her for a couple days. She's clearly dehydrated. Have you checked for a stuck egg? Checked her crop? She sounds in a bad way, but she might still be saved
