Hi all,

I am a long time reader, first time poster.

I currently have a flock of 8 mixed breed chickens who have all been raised together. They free range and generally are very friendly and get along well. There were a few issues with pecking order when growing but seems to have settled now. They are approx 10 weeks and I'm beginning to suspect two are roosters. Unfortunately my frizzle bantam who I suspect is a roo has been a bit rough with some of the other girls head feathers of late and today he's in isolation.

I would love to hear thoughts on breeds and sex. The suspected Roo chest buts a lot but none of the others behave consistently like a Roo so i'm a bit confused.

This is Sabrina who I believe is a Frizzle Bantam and a Pullet

This lovely lady is Cindy Lou who's breed I do not know. I believe she is a Hen, and the top of the pecking order.

This little lady is Li Ming and is a black australorps pullet (I think!)

Here we have June Dally Watkins who I am lost about. I know she is a bantam but i have no idea what breed. Perhaps Japanese? I also cannot tell if she is a cockerel or pullet. Sometimes she behaves both ways. Her feathers and hackles have me guessing.

This is Sooki, who is a bearded Silkie Bantam. I think a Pullet?

Here is Florence. I have no idea what breed she is. She's definitely a bantam and likely a pullet. Behaves the most like a hen.

Here is poor little Mabel. She's looking very worse for wear because she battled a respiratory illness when she was young and has recently been attacked by the frizzle and is sporting some Iodine on her head. I know she is full sized but i have no idea what breed. Im not even sure she's a pullet.

Lastly we have Frizzle. Fairly confident he is a bantam Cockerel. Bit of naughty behaviour pecking very hard at the girls head feathers and not letting go till they come out. He is very sweet to me and doesn't really behave that much like a roo apart from chest bumps and head pecks. He isn't overly concerned with danger to the flock or food drama. He's also still making lots of clucking sort of noises so I really can't tell whats going on. Im considering Pinless peepers to stop the behaviour. Im not really keen on having more than one roo but at this stage its just very hard for me to tell who is a roo anyway. Any feedback is very much appreciated.

The cockerels that I see are your blue eared guy, and the one you call Frizzle. The one with the Iodine on its head, looks like a gold laced Wyandotte.Li Ming is either an australorp or jersey giant. Sabrina looks to be a frizzle bantam cochin.

It looks like you have several mixed breeds. The first is a pullet, and could be a frizzle cochin or might just be a mixed breed frizzle. The second I am suspicious is a cockerel, and looks like maybe a blue wyandotte or a mix. Third looks to be a pullet so far, and might be a black australorp or a black jersey giant or could be another mix. Fourth is a mixed breed cockerel, I suspect he is part silkie. Fifth is a silkie or silkie mix, looks to be a pullet so far, but silkies are very hard to sex. Sixth is another mix, again probably part silkie, and looks to be a pullet so far. Fifth looks to be a golden laced wyandotte. Lastly is another mix cockerel.

I concur with Pyxis' assessment.

Thank you all so much for replies!

I didn't realise they were all so mixed breed! No matter though. Seems i may have more cockrels than I originally thought.

You have all been extremely helpful so thank you.

Can I ask Pyxis what makes you suspect the blue wyandotte may be a cockerel? I actually thought this a while ago due to behaviour and growth but then became convinced she was a pullet!

What a diverse little flock I have :)

Sure :) It's the comb and wattle growth and redness that is making me suspicious. It's a little more advanced than I would expect in a ten week old pullet.
