Assisted Duck Hatch?

I’m hatching ducks in my classroom and have had three hatch so far. Happy and healthy! I do have one that has attempted to unzip but it is at the narrower end of the egg. The air sack is on the opposite side. Today is day 27. The membrane looks a little dry but the incubator has great humidity. Should I assist. He doesn’t seem to be making any progress.

If it's opening and closing it's bill then it is still absorbing the yolk sac. It will probably be ready to hatch or assist after 24 hours.

Yes, assist. Do not remove the duckling completely from the shell. Remove only enough shell and membrane so the duckling can push free when it is time. This eliminates the chance of the duckling hatching with an unabsorbed yolk sack.

As you assist, if there is blood, return the egg to the incubator and try again in a few hours.

Remember-Do not take the duckling out of the shell completely.

Have all the other eggs hatched? Has the duckling in the picture made more than two external pips; working its way around the shell?

The opening and closing his mouth means he is still absorbing the yolk. Most malpostioned chicks can hatch just fine on their own. Leave him be for a few more hours before helping.

As for the dry membrane, a little bit of coconut oil will help keep it mosit.

I had 2 ducklings pip from the wrong end last hatch. They took much longer than the others to finally hatch. I did start to help one a little because I got worried, but noticed it was moving its mouth like yours so I left it alone. Both hatched by themselves when they were ready. Hope all goes well
