Astonishment...First RIR Egg at 3 Mo. 1 week???

I suspect she's one that we thought was a roo. Where the others really had no comb at all hers took off growing & its bright red. Most of the other girls combs are still pink.

My first chickens were RIR chicks from TSC. (Also ended up with a horrible ratio too, we got 10 chicks, ended up with three hens, eww!) But my three hens started laying at four months which was a shock to me as well. Even my WL pullets didn't start laying that young!

Sorry, that's the easiest way to explain it. They start singing right before they start to lay. And they do it after to announce the arrival.

My 25 RIR hens, born, oops, hatched March 11, 09 have started laying. Yesterday I got 6 "pullet" eggs. They are about l/2 the size of a regular egg. And in different shades of brown.

My husband has asked what I am going to do with all those eggs besides make home made ice cream every day?? He is 6'3 and weights 165, never gains an ounce, no matter what he eats and how often.

It is nice to see the fruits of my labors, getting up in the middle of the night to check on them when they were babies.

My human kids don't lay eggs like my chickens do.........
