My family really wants to raise our own chickens. For educational purposes as well as fresh organic eggs. Just found out our cities permit fee is $400, wow, can't afford that. Are our dreams shattered, or is there something we can do about this? Any advise or help would be appreciated. thank you, Tracy

Sorry to hear it. What city is charging $400 to allow you to raise chickens?

Unfortunately, this just confirms my disgust with government in general. All licenses are government selling you the right to do something that they've previously taken away from you.

I know how you feel. Where I live, no matter city limits or countryside, permits are required if you want to own certain animals, including various breeds of ducks, ringneck pheasants, and some types of quail. They run rather pricey too, though not as much as you it seems. More around $150-$200 a year. Still, just another way for the government to drain our pockets.

Thank you for all your comments!

For claritys sake are those fees assessed one time, annually or other? Are they specific to keepg a flock or are you including building permit fees for the coop(if required) etc?

Leave it to the ultra "liberal" state of California to allow nonsense like that. Sorry to hear that they are such dicks about allowing you to have a few chickens. Doubt there's much you can do. But you can always appeal the permit fee to the city council at a meeting I'd wager. Not sure it will do any good but is worth a shot. Especially if you could get other residents involved as well.
